You don't think it seems irregular for a front door to be open and no one inside responding from the door?

Why'd you leave your front door open bruh.

I live in a safe area.

But in regards to this....no one called me in dead, and whom ever contacted my latest employer.

I'm thinking this whole situation was huge rookie mistake.

Bro youre just an NPC in the JRPG that is the cops lives: they can just barge in and talk to you whenever they want

but seriously, close your door. Your area is only safe until someone commits a crime.

I need to focus on the positive.

No.

No matter how safe youre area is. Do not leave your door unlocked, especially when youre asleep. How old are you? Seems like youre old enough to live on your own, so you should definitely be old enough to know not to do that.

Actually, yes.

It happened to a friend of mine. He was chilling in the living room while his parents weren't home, and heard the doorknob kinda shaking, went to check it out and there was a guy with his hood up and a knife(he said it was a knife, but I honestly don't believe it was). He usually has the lights off in his house and reads books and shit in the dark, because he's a fucking wacko.

Dude shook the door a couple times, searched the front for a key(picked up a plant, rocks, etc). My friend was watching from the side window, and it was dark(which is why I don't believe he saw a knife). He was calling the cops, then the guy left to try another house. Cops picked up the dude soon after.

Some people are desperate enough to try a locked house, some just hope that the door is unlocked so they have an easier time.

Regardless, it can help. Especially with a deadbolt.

That being said, TC, this pretty much seems like it is on you solely. The cops were just doing their job here.

Any responsible person knows to keep your damn door shut and locked,I'm not buying that your cat kicked it open during the night. No cat is that strong or can open a door on their own.

More than likely the code enforcer came by because of the downed tree, saw your door open and called the cops to check it out because a door open isn't normal and add to the fact that your grass is overgrown so they probably thought that the house is maybe abandoned and that someone broke into it since the door was open.

Picking a lock or making noise in a dark neighborhood would be a dumb move. Imagine someone sees you on your knees in front of a door for minutes on end fiddling with a lock? Or worse, hears you smash in a window or a door?

Just shaking a locked door a few times while people are sleeping isn't bound to alert anyone. You only risk being caught if someone is watching you.

A lot of victim blaming going on here.

But yeah, sounds like they checked on behest of the code enforcer who kind of overstepped but most wellness checks are that way anyway. I'm assuming he went over to talk to you and got freaked out by the door open and no response. His concern came from a good place if that helps.

Also, people will definitely just walk into other people's homes at night. As a kid a guy was coming home from a bar and tried to smash his way into our back door because he was so out of it that he thought he had locked himself out of his own house. I had a coworker recently wake up to a man just passed out on her living room floor. She had left her back door open for her teenaged daughter that had gone out and forgotten her key. My sister in law lives in a double and had a very similar experience of a dude just being in the stairwell area because her upstairs neighbor left the back door unlocked. It definitely happens even if it isn't always malicious intent.

Well...yeah. He left his door unlocked. Of course he's to blame for this lol. That's like saying it's victim blaming if someone shoots themselves in the foot and they're mad because they had to go to the doctor. Yeah, you kinda shot yourself in the foot lol.

What's he even a victim of? Being checked if he's not dead?

I don't think this is like...half as bad a situation as it could have been.

I think this situation went the way it probably should have. If the police thought that there was a risk that you were injured/dead (door left open, no response to shouts, unkempt garden), wouldn't you rather that they checked in on you instead of shrugging and walking away? I'd understand your concern if they broke your door down to do so, but it seems like they didn't really negatively impact you at all.

This is probably true, but they did contact my employer so they have know I was still, most likely alive. Honestly it probably did come from actual concern, but the enforcer went into enforcement mode...but like I said the cops kinda got out of the situtation towards the end.

...For the record, I was drinking a beer with this dude like a week ago. I even said to him, "I was just talking to you the other day"....not that he knew who I was when he rolled up. ~Still he could have just said, hey buddy glad you're alright, just pleace talk to your neihbor for me.

I feel like he's the type of guy who wants to be a cop but can't for some reason.

....And yes, from the inside my cat can open my door if he wants to. If the porch door is open...then it's open. And anyway, I could have my doors open and not hear someone knocking, particularly with an AC on in a closed room two rooms away from the front door.

Failure to answer your door doesn't warrant an invasion of privacy like that.

Well two things, first he can. It's about a 140 year old door and doesn't actually latch properly. If he's on the outside he can open it himself. It has an old brass doorknob.
When I lock it is with a deadbolt, which is significantly younger, and I have a chain thingy as well.
And even still, and open door doesn't mean I'm dead or some shit.
I have left the door open before as it is. It's winter up here for like 8/9 months of the year...its nice to have some airflow.

As someone who has had a wellness check called on them, from what I understand the general requirements are a concern for well-being and signs of suspicious circumstance. So yeah, a door being open is actually a reason.

Mine was because I had my cellphone off for like two weeks while I was taking care of my mother who was recovering from surgery. I was technically "missing" for an entire day because I wasn't actually at my house when the cops came. Complete fucking drama fest that was

Fun what you described, the police entering your home had nothing to do with a missing person report. And despite what you seem to think, it was not a violation of your 4th amendment rights.

Your front door was open and you were not responding to them as they called out. That gives them probably cause to enter your home. It's a suspicious circumstance. For all they knew, you weren't responding because you were dead, or seriously injured.

You'd be totally wrong there.

The officer entered in good faith, the door was open. If they found your meth lab, they would not ignore it.

I'm not sure but without a warrant I think they could only charge him with what they could see from the door. Might differ by state but it's called plain view law or something. Now if there was a dead body in sure that rule would go right out the window.

Something like drugs I bet theyd just come back later with a warrant.

As said in not as positive on that.

For a wellness check I feel they should ha e still attempted the door bell or knocking on the outside door yelling "anyone home" etc before entering

I was in the very least heavy-handed.

So, if I'm in a room with AC going and a fan, and playing music or av video game, I can't have a door open? I don't live on a street known for crime, and there have been no reports of breakins in town....like when there is a wave of breakins.

People do not generally leave their doors open even in extremely safe areas. Closest you get is leaving a storm door closed with a window open during waking hours or while busy, and even that is rare.

So I come home one day to a note from constable wrigglesworth (actual name) asking the occupant to call him. So I did, but even though I knew that wasn't how they handled a drug bust I was fucking terrified.

Turned out he wanted to buy my poppas early 40s wood boat the guppy.

It might be odd but not the end of the world.
And anyway, no one would know that door was open unless they were standing right there. You can't see that door from the road.

That sounds like an awesome boat!!!

It was so cool. I was a baby when my poppa got it and it was just a mess and has a vw beetle motor somehow fitted in and was just kind of a Frankenstein of an old wood boat.

My poppa got it all fixed up and had it all redone top to bottom with a new engine and everything and it was beautiful. She was slow but she was pretty.

Poor thing has been rotting in my dads driveway for 20 years or more now.

People do not generally leave their doors open even in extremely safe areas. Closest you get is leaving a storm door closed with a window open during waking hours or while busy, and even that is rare.

Unlocked, maybe, but not open.

Meh. I do.

It kinda sounds like a wooden cigar boat. There a lot of those on Lake George, they are beautiful!!
