i think it says a lot that the most popular band is... maroon 5. which barely qualifies.

im guessing its just the fact that hophop basically made rock obsolete.

The classic rock guys basically did it all. Theres really not a whole lot left unless you want to get accused of plagiarism. One more example of how boomers mopped up the workforce.

Rocks not dead, and the real answer is the Internet made it extremely easy for anyone who cares to find new music, so theres no reason for radio stations to be built around anything but the lowest of the lowest common denominator

Rock is no longer marketed as a rebellious or current artform to kids. Those kids are going to EDM shows and whoever the current pop or rap or ratchet chick is.

Rock either gets filtered to be a top 40 friendly act (Maroon 5 or Imagine Dragons) or gets promoted to whatever remaining people are listening to 'modern rock' or alternative rock FM radio formats.

There is a bunch of newer rock bands that will catch on at some point and go big bringing rock back into the forefront of music. Hip-hop/rap will die in the same sense rock did as well soon enough from oversaturation.

The only way rock comes back is if rap and pop guys continue to slide sideways into rock. Post Malone, Machine Gun Kelly, that sort of thing.

Rock music isnt dead in the United States, there is more new music than ever before, but the problem is that very few of it will ever actually have the chance to breakthrough on the waves of radio. Rock radio is driven by playing the hits of cemented legends, not actually playing new young blood and promoting them. It is all about week one sales, and then the artist(s) are off the charts the week or two after. To put it in perspective, it took KISS three studio albums and a live album to breakthrough back in the 1970s.

Probably because the only people who still listen to the radio are casual music listeners who the generic pop appeals to or old people who love their dad rock.

People bought the most pop music and hip hop music so they doubled down on promoting those bands over the radio. Pop radio stations got the most listeners so they got the best ad deals. Rock radio stations got bled out of all their money and died.

Good news is OTA radio is also dead. So now if you want to listen to rock just connect your phone to a Bluetooth speaker and load op Pandora or Spotify or last.fm or some other equivalent and just pick a station you want or make your own.

Rock started dying in earnest in the 70s with hair bands and bullshit acts; it was nothing like what it originated as in the 50's. By the 80's it was dead and its children started coming into prominence. We've seen some reviving of it in the past two decades but it's still pretty far descended from its 50's roots now.

Trends and commercialization. Same thing that happens to every popular music genre. Just like a lot of Rap is garbage now, it's because companies find a "sound that sells" and beat you over the head with it until they move on to whatever can sell next. You have to sift through that stuff to find the good bits.

Rock is non existent and rap is the most popular genre on the lanet.

Bad analogy.

My point was what was happening to rock is currently happening to rap. It starts with record labels finding an easy to produce sound that can vary just enough to feel fresh and they just reproduce it until you want to vomit.

Mind, rap has enough genuinely talented artists out there to fight against it, but it's still a fight that will be lost with time until we move on to whatever the next most popular genre is for some decades
