Portland actually got a decent amount of snow for a few days earlier this year. More than a foot in one day, which is a lot for the area.

The limit for what the human body can withstand is approximately 130 degrees, though your risk of heat stroke and all first starts around 80 degrees and gets alarming in the mid 90s, by 100 you're basically gonna need to avoid the sun entirely to be safe.

People laughing in Midwestern don't realize that our part of the country has never had these conditions and more importantly, not very much here is built to withstand this kind of weather. Our infrastructure isn't able to handle it. Most home owners have AC but when electrical cables literally melt in temperatures they'd never reach, it means fuck all. Plus all the apartment renters, and homeless people. Basically? You've never actually been in these kinds of conditions because you're in an area that has things in place to withstand the heat.

We've had probably the nicest start to summer in Florida. It rains most days around 1pm, cools things down, and even if the sun comes back out, it hovers in the low to mid 80s. July and August usually suck, but so far so good.

I was gonna ask, how common are ACs up there? Do apartment renters really not have them?

They're not legally required, only heat. So they're really rare, none of the apartments I've been in here had them unless they were a friend's place in a closer to upscale than not type of building. If that description makes sense. Programmer type of income but not programmer with money to blow kind of income types would be the ones to live there.

Nearest cooling center to me is probably downtown so it's... Troubling. If the power went out here I'd be fucked. My new gf would pick me up again to chill in her house, sure, but my roommates are disabled veterans and have a cat. So I'd still be worried regardless.

Ah, but that's getting off topic from what you asked. Basically, no, most apartments don't have AC and there's enough areas without power that there's a lot of people at risk from this heat. Just based on hospital admissions I'm wagering a dozen heat related deaths happened Sunday and Monday here.
