One of the primary benefits of "formal academic setting debates" is the common body of research to draw upon. If you and I had an impromptu debate on the minimum wage, it's likely that we'll come to an exchange like this (assuming we're arguing opposite sides). Me: X study says that minimum wage increase actually creates more profit for businesses because it puts money in the hands of the workers who are more likely to circle money through those businesses. You: Ah, but Y study says that it would actually decrease profits from those businesses. Since there's lots of contradictory research out there, it's likely I haven't read Y study and you haven't read X study.
