Also, maybe this is a stereotype or soemthing, but I think a lot of companies also have their workers exercise at points throughout the day. Not to mention a lot ride bikes and walk to their locations.

  1. Very few cars compared to other countries proportionally. Most people walk, bike, or take public transportation which means walking the rest of the way. Japan's subway is one of if not the best in the world.
  2. Diet is a lot of fish which is much more healthy than beef or pork.
  3. They don't have a lot of dairy. There's just not a lot of things like butter or cheese used in their food staples. Essentially the least healthy thing is white rice.
tl;dr get exercise and stop eating shitty food just because it tastes good.

i read it a long time ago, but here's an article with some sources: https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/obesity-prevention-source/ethnic-differences-in-bmi-and-disease-risk/ "After 20 years, researchers found that at the same BMI, Asians had more than double the risk of developing type 2 diabetes than whites"

Appropriate body-mass index for Asian populations and its implications for policy and intervention strategies
  • DOI: 10.1016/S0140-6736(03)15268-3
The consultation concluded that the proportion of Asian people with a high risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease is substantial at BMIs lower than the existing WHO cut-off point for overweight (> or =25 kg/m2). However, available data do not necessarily indicate a clear BMI cut-off point for all Asians for overweight or obesity. The cut-off point for observed risk varies from 22 kg/m2 to 25 kg/m2 in different Asian populations; for high risk it varies from 26 kg/m2 to 31 kg/m2. No attempt was made, therefore, to redefine cut-off points for each population separately

Clinical evaluation of body fat percentage in 11,833 Japanese measured by air displacement plethysmograph
  • DOI: 10.2169/internalmedicine.44.702
We used data of 11,833 Japanese subjects aged 20-79 years [body mass index (BMI): 23.2+/-3.7 kg/m2]. ... the level of 25% in men and 35% in women corresponded to 25 kg/m2 of BMI
