If the queen lays an egg she can choose to fertilize it with the sperm she stores from her mating flight. If she doesn't fertilize it, it develops into a drone bee, which is a half clone of the queen's genome. Drones are literally bees made of haploid cells, the same cells that make up egg or sperm cells. Drones create sperm cells which are identical copies of the drone's genome. Thus all of a drone's daughters will be much more closely related than full sisters of other animals. However a queen mates with 5-19 drones during her mating flight so not all of a queen's daughters will have the same father. Mating lasts only a few seconds, so every bee has to make the most of their one shot. The reason the sex kills them is the explosive force meant to deliver as much sperm as possible to the queen ruptures their endophallus. Drones life expectancy is only about 90 days. And since there are many more drones than queens many will not find a mate, estimates are less than one in 1000. If the drone fails to mate and was born later in the season, the workers will push them out of the hive in the late fall leaving them to starve and/or freeze to death during the winter. So while some may die happy, many will not. Though they do mimic some of the jobs workers perform. They'll shiver when cold, heating the hive. They'll fan their wings when hot to cool the hive down. And they'll fly into an intruder's face to disorient them if the hive is disturbed. But for the most part they eat honey until they're grown enough to go congregate in mating areas. Go fly around for 25-50 minutes looking for a queen.
