A piece of media - be it a song, comic, book, movie, game - that was a genuinely groundbreaking piece of culture, but it was adapated from something kind of stupid.

I'll use Gungrave as an example. Really one of the best animes I've ever seen, with this thoughtful and melancholy story expertly told - but based on a ridiculous and crappy third person shooter game where you play as a sort of zombie vampire cowboy.

Bohemian Rhapsody could be another example. Although we're all probably sick of it, it's still an absolute monument of pop opera history, but the lyrics to the song mean absolutely nothing. For decades people have tried to work out hidden meanings in the words but it came out that Freddie Mercury was just making up total nonsense psychobabble to fill up the verses.

Schopenhaur - The Art of Controversy has a part titled "Beauty and Interest" or something like that at the end. The rest of the book is how to win arguments by making your interlocutor look foolish and stuff like that

Might not be a perfect use case of your topic but I tried. I'm bad at trivia lol

Im pretty sure Star Wars is basically George Lucas just jerking off his nostalgia for cheesy movie serials.

Shape of Water is famously Del Toros own erotic Creature of the Black Lagoon fanfiction. (He wanted the creature to get with the woman lol)

Frankenstein was written in part as a personal contest between Shelley and Lord Byron to see who could write a better horror story.

Hotel California

the lyrics dont actually amount to much since all they wanted to do was simulate a random instance of time ala the styling of The Twilight Zone

Not really the topic, but poetry as an art form in general. The rules seem so damn arbitrary. It feels like it was made up on a whim, and everyone follows it out of tradition. It doesn't seem like the rules help relay the message or make it sound better at all. Songs sound better, and regular language conveys messages better.
