So a small house in the bay area will be the same as a mansion in Alabama. But you get amazing people around you, amazing food, high quality services of any kind driven by competition. You get amazing weather. You get some of the finest schools in the country for your kids. You can trust that your kids are growing up with other good kids. You also don't deal with alligators, pests, mosquitos. Don't deal with tornados, thunderstorms, hurricanes. If ur not well off you'll get plenty of welfare services available to you in California.

From afar it seems stupid that'd you'd live in California if the cost of living is that high. But once you're here, you realize why it's so amazing and you understand why the price difference exists.

Of course in any capitalistic economy, not everything is priced accurately or fairly. So if someone posts a 2 million dollar shack in SF it's meaningless. I'm talking about averages.

I mean everyone's values are different. If actual living space is the priority and weather and type of people and schools and weather and all those other things are low priority then yea you'd be dumb to live in California.

For the $257k I paid for my 6 bed 3 bath 3300sqft house in Omaha which also has a shitload of great restaurants, good schools, etc(but does have awful winters and summers, mosquitos, and tornadoes!)

Whats weird is that some of the most expensive areas have below average schools. (Im looking at you, San Mateo.)

School's just 1 factor. I don't think people are moving to Malibu or Miami because of the school system.

Unless the amazing people are genetically enhanced cyborgs and every local joint including the Deli has Michelin stars, seems kind of absurd to pay a million bucks for a home smaller than my college dorm like I see in some expensive areas.
