.... I know there's some crazy kid's cartoon episodes out there, but this one always kind of stuck to me as one of the most serious cartoon episodes I ever saw on TV as a kid. Some shows brought up some situations indirectly, but this episode of Captain Planet was very.....VERY direct about drugs to the point they even killed a character off with the drugs. (A minor character, but still)

I can also think of things like the One Beer episode of Tiny Toons, which was a bit off the side there.... or the Courage episodes with spooky weird stuff, but the Captain Planet drug episode was just a crazy ride.

Was there anything made for kids that you feel was more..... serious and direct than this episode?

There's an episode of Captain Planet where a microcosm of mutant humanoid mice trigger the apocalypse through overpopulation. The dying words of the last mouse family the team sees, while able and willing to save that family, are "no, we deserve to burn to death for overpopulation, heed our lesson."

I thought it was a fucking fever dream until I saw it covered in a youtube video about old disturbing cartoon episodes.

Crazy. I know cartoons in the 80s were more hardcore than modern kids cartoons but I don't remember this. I was born in 81 so I would have been old enough to see this but I dont think I watched Captain planet much

Boomerang showed that episode as part of an Earth Day marathon. I was pretty shocked. Even the G.I. Joe style moral wrap-up before the credits had them stating that overpopulation was a serious problem and that, if you were going to have a family, make sure it was a small one.

The final episode of Jem and the Holograms had them trying to find an orphan's father. A guy pretending to be him kidnaps so he can sell her off in human trafficking, while the real dad chases them to save her but is having Vietnam flashbacks along the way.

Also Fat Albert had some heavy episodes as well. Also British shows like Tugs and Animals of farthing wood.

Wasn't there an episode of the magic school bus where one of the guys got so fed up with his cousin he basically committed suicide just to shut her up? I mean he got better but I remember a kid calling in about the episode saying that due to how space works rather than being frozen solid for taking his helmet off shouldn't he have died instantly? And the network basically said they had to take some liberties with the science there because actually killing the kid would have sent the wrong message or something.

it always stuck with me because any time I've been in a situcation with an annoying as fuck person I would imagine taking my helmet off just like that kid did to either shut them up just finally end the pain.

Oh, Grimm adventures of billy and mandy has some pretty fucked up episodes too like that one where that nice kid gets hunted down by a demonic rabbit, he even blows up a truck hoping the explosion would kill it yet it emerges from the wreckage with it's flesh peeling off slowly approaching the boy while talking about how it's going to love him to DEATH as it closes up on it's horrific face and the boy screams.

Oh, there was also invader im where either zim or dib died multiple times and one of those deaths for Dib was actually suppose to stick but Nickolodian got on the creator's asses about it so they made him live, I think it was the one where Zim triggers an explosion but it's in slow mo and just as Dib manages to avoid it despite also being slowed down Zim throws him into the center of it and it blows up, however a cartoonishly charred dib lands right next to Zim and calls him some kind of insult before passing out and the episode ends. Actually, now that I think on it, they tried to kill Dib off alot such as the one where Zim legit kills him by hitting him with a piggy disabling his life support system and we even hear the flatline of his heart stopping and another one where he was suppose to be eaten by a crazy mole person in an abandoned mall parking garage.
