Board 8 > Thinking of getting back into VR, what's the best one to get?

I tried out an Occulus today and it was a lot more fun than the PSVR.

For anyone that has had one for awhile, how have they held up? Are there plans for a consistent release of games? And should I wait for the next device if a new one is coming this year?

Index if you want a top of the line VR headset and finger tracking (only relevant in a handful of games like Half-Life Alyx). This requires some dedicated space as you need to set up tracking towers.

Quest 2 if you want a standalone headset experience. Word of warning, a Facebook account is required for this and if you somehow lose access to the FB account or it gets banned, your headset is useless.

In terms of games, I keep meaning to play more, but honestly my wife and I just ended up sinking hundreds of hours into Beatsaber instead.

immensely easy and free

• start the game once to init some files and close
• download+run beatsaber ModAssistant.exe and Agree to terms
• click Mods [tab] > Install [button]
• download songs (bsaber, beatsaver)
• drop to /{Steam installation}/steamapps/common/Beat Saber/Beat Saber_Data/CustomLevels/

Modding beat saber requires a few extra steps if you are getting Quest 2, but it's perfectly manageable for any reasonably tech savvy person.

I have the Rift-S so it's wired VR only and personally I love it.

My wife's best friend got the Quest 2 and I had to help her sort out the mods so I have experiencing modifying beatsaber for both setups.

GMUN's instructions are correct for PC-based VR, but you have to use a program called SideQuest to modify content on a Quest if you go for the wireless headset. It's just a side loader that you use to interact with files on the headset while you have it connected to a PC, but then you have to be particularly careful to not allow your game to update itself automatically because it takes longer for the Quest version to get supported when there are updates.

I agree with all of the above, however I'd also like to note that the Vive 2 launched a couple weeks ago and visually it's even better than the Index in some areas.

Reviewers still prefer the Index for comfort and speakers though so you could consider it a tossup between the two, just wanted to throw it out there as a third option.
