Relm if you don't know what you're doing

Because crashing the game and possibly even deleting your save file through sheer accident is significantly more awful than waiting for Mr. Thou to tick up to tech8.

Umaro by far. Other characters can at least make up for their weakness by spamming Ultima.

Otherwise, Gau imo. Too inconsistent for my liking.

Umaro, then Cyan. Cyan at least has flexibility to use items/be an Imp Dragoon/cast magic and regardless can easily match Umaro's damage output.

This is a good point though, even if Relm is one of my favorites:

Bottom tier is Umaro, Gau if you don't use a FAQ, & Relm if you hit the sketch bug. Cyan isn't great later on, but he's really powerful in the first half of the game & everybody is broken once you get to the WoR.

as others have said, Cyan's weaknesses can at least be offset. Umaro is just annoying because you can't ever tell him what to do.

Cyan makes a good Kappa.

Umaro can't do shit.

Also the mobile / PC version fixes cyan so you just pick a Bushido skill and then you can go controlling the other characters.

Cyan is awful.

Gau is probably the best character provided you get Stray Cat.

Relm is also a drag with the glitch.

Strago is bad.

Strago has a few useful things he can do like white wind and mighty guard that don't need his magic stat to exist.

Locke gets the uberpowerful Valiant Knife, which breaks the game with the masters scroll and the Genji Glove easier than anyone else cause the only work you have to do is get Locke in WOR. Locke is a weird case in that he is low tier in the WOB, but then jumps up to top tier in WOR.

Definitely Umaro for the Topic.

Other Candidates can do 9999x4 with Masters scroll or 9999x2 with Soul of Thamasa

Except Umaro, he cant be controlled, so most he can do is 9999x1.

Stray Cat is the inbetween. Stray Cat and Templat make Gau a nice randomly atrong character without breaking anything. Stray Cat is average 2.5 times damage compared to spamming Fqng/Dispatch which is 120 BP and ignores def.

That's a huge portion of the game, though. Before that he's a Steal-bot in mobile version. He drags down almost every team for a long time.
