Lucca is benched any time I'm not forced to use her. Fuck Lucca.

Speaking of fuck Lucca, I think Crono should've fucked Lucca rather than Marle imo

I don't think Marle gave him a choice.

God damn, this is hard. They're all good and all have their uses. The one I use the least is Robo, so I'll choose him. His triple Tech with Frog and Crono is serious heat, though.

I like Robo for grinding since he has multiple attacks that hit everyone. Solid damage as well and can heal the entire party.

Honestly it's probably Magus; sure his spells are good in the earlier stages but late game his techs pale in comparison to everyone else's.

Marle is the worst. In a normal playthrough, everyone else is better. In a speedrun, I think she's only used to Haste Magus for Doom Scythe on Rust Tyrano. End game, she's still worse than everyone else.

Magus is great in a normal playthrough. He has high attack and great magic. He's basically the second best generalist for a newbie's first time through.

Frog has great heals (Slurp Kiss and Heal Wave), some good dual techs (anything with Crono), and makes one of the hardest bosses much easier. He's pretty good, buf falls off lategame except in healing.

Robo has amazing heals with Heal Beam and dual techs, great damage, and a nice array of techs. He's great.

Ayla has Falcon Hit, the most useful dual tech in the game. She has great damage on her own, the only way to steal, heals (Slurp Kiss), and good end game weapons. Possibly best character.

Lucca has nice AOE damage early and great AOE damage mid-late. She has great equipment, but falls off in damage as other teammates become OP. Fire Whirl alone puts her above Marle.

Ayla is also obviously best girl.

I voted Ayla because she has the worst dialogue by far and the game is easy enough that most of the time it doesn't matter who you have.
I will literally fight you irl

Mar...

Oh.

Um, Frog I guess.

His heals feel redundant when you have Robo, Water never seemed like a strong element outside of one lategame dungeon, no "ultimate" spell like nearly everyone else, and it always sucked how he couldn't use his best weapon on New Game+ so you had to settle for the next best thing ...unless you sold it and instead had to replay the whole thing collecting weapons for him *again*.

Chrono Trigger is super easy, to the point that tiers dont really matter, and youd almost never notice a significant gap in power level between characters.

The exception to this is Marle, who consistently feels like shes lagging behind everyone else, and is rarely offensively viable without Dual Techs. (Tbf tho the Antipodes are really good mid game spells).

You'd think being at a high level/having a high PWR stat would render that issue void, but weapon strength in this game modifies damage caps in ways that you wouldn't otherwise notice with everyone else on New Game+ because they're running around with "high ceilings" so to speak at that point.

Hell, it's probably why Ayla destroys with her bare hands; She isn't affected by weapon values at all. Just pure, raw, unfiltered attack power.

She's essential. Gotta nick them speed tabs.

I'm ashamed how long it took me to realize stealing was even a thing in CT. Quite a bit happens before you get Ayla, but the only things available are the feather/fang/petal drops you going to get anyway, and then you leave her to do more things, and eventually kome back for another feather/fang/petal arc. No fair, Batman.

Does anyone know the actual damage formula for Frog Squash and other "based on HP" attacks?

Basically, "lower HP = higher damage".

Amusingly, the opening to Chrono Trigger its self showcases this effect in action. (Notice Frog's HP being particularly low?)

https://youtu.be/u4Mk3_cb1TA?t=120

Of course, this ends up being *another* knock against Frog because Ayla gets Dino Tail which does the same thing on top of everything else she can do.

Hell, he doesn't get a unique Single Tech at all now that I think about it. Almost everything he does, somebody else can do too. Sword specials? Crono. Water damage? Marle. Group heals? Robo. Poor sod even learns Cure 2 *after* Marle does it first, and Ayla gets Dino Tail before he gets Frog Squash too.

Oh and here's a laugh... Slurp Cut can "miss" on grounded/unmovable enemies/bosses. You know what else does? Rock Throw. Literally the only two Single Techs with this quirk. The man can't even fail in his own special way.

Marle does have one niche use in the DS version. She gets a bow that does 777 fixed damage that bypasses defenses.
