Lucca is absolutely pointless once Frogmaster Flex and Ayla join the crew.

Frog.

Shit damage, no badass all-powerful attacks that hit everyone (like Luminaire, Flare, and Magus' asteroid thing), and uses that stupid "legendary" sword which is quickly outclassed by everyone else while he holds on to it until late game.

The only good technique he has is that move with Marle that heals everyone, and she's a good enough healer by herself (or use Robo).

100% agree. The only reason I ever put her in my party is if she has heavy involvement in a certain aspect of the story before a fight but even then, I'm not utilizing her to the fullest cuz her movesets are bad for most of the game.

There's no point to Marle. Frog is just a Marle that has more attacking options.

The problem with CT is that you can't just rank the characters on how "good" they are, because there are certain good characters (Robo) that are basically the same as other good ones (Frog), but better. Both Robo and Frog are better than Lucca, but Lucca enables pyro reactions. You don't need Robo and Frog together, doing basically the same thing with different visual flares.

Lucca and Ayla both have gimmick weapons that allow them to potentially do 9999 damage, though it's easier to achieve with Ayla.

By the time I get Magus he has Lightning/Fire/Ice 2, but my guys are stronger than that and the spell is kinda useless

Marle's still the worst! You don't need revives by that point, and attacking power is almost redundant, but she still caps out at trash damage.

Marle. her only real exclusive spell/tech is Haste, but you can just get a helmet that auto enables that.

Lucca kicks so much ass with a silver or gold stud. mega bomb and flare all day

It's an easy enough RPG that you can really play with any party combination and have a good time.

Last year I did a run where

Didnt revive Crono, killed Magus, and didn't reactive Robo. Robo still shows up in the ending though lol

Frog is probably better than Lucca overall, but Frog's entire existence is rendered obsolete by Robo. So I say Frog for just being super redundant.

But others get good healing spells too. Robo and Frog both get party heals and Frog can hit with water damage. Her only claim to fame is her Haste and Full Revive, but they aren't that useful at all.

I voted Ayla because she has the worst dialogue by far and the game is easy enough that most of the time it doesn't matter who you have.

Honestly magus because no triple techs except for 2 rocks which have their own downside.

It depends on how you measure it. The answer is different if you mean their strength throughout the story, versus their strength at the endgame, versus their strength at level 99, versus their strength at level 99 with maxed stats. And yeah Chrono Trigger is such an easy game the whole debate is kind of pointless but it is fun to consider.

It's easy to say Marle because she doesn't do a lot of damage and for some reason she doesn't learn a non-dual-tech heal-all spell despite being the support character. Even Frog and Robo get a heal-all. But I think a lot of people underestimate Haste. It basically doubles a character's DPS and it lasts really long in Chrono Trigger, usually one cast goes an entire boss battle. At the very endgame you can get Haste Helms for auto-haste without Marle though so her use dies down then.

Frog has moments in the story where he's pretty good but no real specialization and his single techs are really nothing special so speaking endgame or level 99 he doesn't scale up like some other characters do. Similarly, Magus doesn't have a lot of utility. He has amazing stats out of the box but it is technically possible for other characters to have mostly the same amazing stats with enough grinding.

It's the opposite of the question but it's worth emphasizing Ayla is by far the best character at level 99 and it's not even close. Her Bronze Fist is just broken, and the DS version adds new equipment that makes it even more broken.

God damn, this is hard. They're all good and all have their uses. The one I use the least is Robo, so I'll choose him. His triple Tech with Frog and Crono is serious heat, though.
