Im not 100% sure but im guessing the blatant authoritarianism has some of the blame as well.

Im not even sure what communism is anymore, to my knowledge communistic countries still have money afterall.

The Soviet Union basically provided them the perfect propaganda by being authoritarian state capitalism calling itself communism. Workers ended up with more rights, better wages and better working conditions in Western countries. Communism just became a word for authoritarianism. In countries that actually had established socialist movements there was still a desire for worker control of the means of production but in the US socialism has become associated with social democracy, which is a form of capitalism. People in the US are so disconnected from what the core concept of socialism is that it basically has no chance existing in the present environment there.

I live in a country with an actual communist party and it isn't associated with authoritarianism or capitalism because it never claimed the Soviet Union or China had communism or that it wanted to be anything like them. It's funny that there are actually a number of young Americans, tankies, that explicitly say authoritarian state capitalism is communism which only further destroys any chance the general public would ever want anything to do with it.

Capitalism propaganda, think about it. Rich people tell you can be the next person, can everyone be the CEO of WalMart no but a million of the workers scrape by thinking they can work up to be the next CEO just put in the extra hours

We spent the better half of the last century in a cold war, in which the stakes quickly became total annihilation, against an extremely antagonistic and powerful communist country.

Itd be crazier if we werent conditioned to dislike communism.
