I'm a bit hesitant due ro to a fear of needles but I'm hellbent on doing it. So..any advice?

Make sure you are sure about what you want to get. Remember, it is permanent. You get what you pay for, so don't cheap out. Its going to hurt, but it won't kill you.

Tattoo needles aren't the same as medical needles. It feels more like someone scraping on you and after a few minutes it starts to feel pretty good. That's assuming you're getting it on an "easy" location like your arm or leg. Ticklish places are going to hurt more, and places with tighter skin have the potential to hurt more, just depends (I have a tattoo on my shoulder, felt like the needle was bumping the bone but it didn't hurt at all so... just kinda hit or miss there).

Definitely review the artist's portfolio before booking. If you want a greyscale piece find a good tattooer who specializes in black and grey. If you want a portrait you absolutely need to find someone who has experience with portraits. There are a lot of different styles out there, and a lot of different color palettes - a new school guy can probably pull off a traditional, but they won't do as good as a person who does traditional a lot.

Also make sure you're 100% satisfied with the positioning, if there's any text quadruple check to make sure it's correct.

research artists and studios, dont just walk into the closest spot, theres a huge gap in quality out there and you want to make sure the person that is permanently marking you has a good track record
