I disagree with her logic but it's a common argument

"Racism is discrimination + power, since only whites have power in the US , only they can be racist " is a widespread belief

It's pretty stupid and harmful

It bothers me that people still defend Muhammad Ali saying he would hate his grandkids if they were the wrong color.

That's not okay, just because Tucker Carlson didn't say it, doesn't mean its automatically okay

What if a black judge or police officer or whatever other position of power hates Asians just for being Asian? The "no systemic power" types really seem to forget all the black people in positions of power.

I believe they think that systemic racism negates anything and so it is literally impossible for a black person to have more power than a white or asian person in any context.

It's also not even accurate since there aren't just white people in positions of power in the US

I mean Obama had two full terms as POTUS for fuck's sake.

They're not talking about individuals, they're talking about In general

The vast majority of wealth, positions of power, authority etc comes from white guys

The whole system America is built on came from 3 centuries of setting up white guys to be in charge

I disagree with their logic but your counter is missing the point

Put it another way you might understand.

You're playing a video game and die over and over at a really hard part.

Then you get lucky with RNG, less enemies happen to spawn, you get crits and the positioning makes it doable. So you get past it.

Does that mean the part is no longer hard? or it is hard and that was an exception that one attempt in a thousand happened to defeat?

I don't think they're wrong to say white guys in America have privilege, I think they're wrong to say racism requires privilege

The video in the post right under the racist thing. the video in the post is not the picture. Dude mentions that Egypt has been a player in the world for thousands of years and she responds with "centuries in fact" -_-

In the YouTube video, around 35minutes in, the question is:
"If a white person hates Asians, are they racist"
"Yes."
"But then he actually says if an Hispanic person hates Asians."
She then answers in a pretty long and convoluted way to say that, Hispanics have little power so they can't be racist. Only people with power can be racist. Or that's how it sounded to me to me at least.

Without making any comment on the video, my understanding is that power dynamics are key to the racism vs. prejudice distinction I learnt from a twenty-something TA who had switched her thesis twice. That class was a bit ridiculous, but I do think it's a useful distinction of vocabulary.

Racism is hate + power and so members of racially downtrodden groups lack the institutional ability to enact racism, no matter how much they may loathe/fear/wish to constrain White people. So, for instance, it was White people who wrote redlining, anti-miscegenation, immigration quota/limit, Native American reservation laws in order to keep a certain set of norms in place that propped up Whites at the expense of (or for the purposeful detriment) of the racialized groups.

Prejudice is having hate/fear/judgments about a group of people. So whoever mentioned a Black judge and an Asian defendant, the judge could pass down an unfairly strict sentence just because of prejudice, but would not --- as a Black judge --- have the institutional power to make rulings systematically go against Asians, even if he banded together with other prejudiced Black judges because (1) their numbers are too small within the courts, because of the centuries of racist policies that kept Black people and other POC out of law school and (2) the identity of "Black judge" is not a strong, politically valuable bloc of people who can enact change because there has not been any type of greater subculture coming out of a naturally occurring population of Black judges (compared to, say, Redneck subculture, the notion of White as a meaningful group term, etc).
