Season 4, 5 and 6 were a slog to get through aside from a few episodes. I was told 5 and 6 were better than 4. I was lied to.

No. Aside from the last two episodes of season 6 that whole season was garbage. And they knew it was garbage. I dont know what happened. It was like they didnt know what to do and they phoned it in.

I guess seeing it back to back, directly after the superior seasons 1/2 where Troy was still there, would definitely not help, as you'd feel Troy's absence a lot worse.

It's a shame you disliked season 6 which was definitely better than season 5 which felt like an overly smug overcorrection to season 4 (it really is a shame though that they pointlessly fired Harmon only to bring him back, which just accomplished denying him being involved in Jeff's father episode and more importantly his graduation)

Season 6 can be overly meta true, so your mmv may vary depending on whether you're into that, but the addition of paget brewster as Frankie was actually a surprisingly good move. Almost everyone was expecting to hate her but paget brewster was great in it and ended up rather likable. Most importantly, the season had keith motherfucking david, the voice of Goliath and my personal childhood hero, so it automatically rocks just because of him.

I recently rewatched season 6 and in the past few years have actually warmed up to it, certainly more so than 4/5.

Being overly meta wasnt the issue. The issue is that the show was boring and poorly written. They made jokes in season 4 about the show becoming a parody of itself but thats what it actually became. Then Harmon acted like a smug ass and made the show worse.

My wife tried watching it and I saw some episodes but have zero desire to watch that show. I have no idea why people recommend it to me all the time.

I still think season 6 was worse than the gas leak season. I don't care that Dan Harmon was back for it, the episodes are too long, and the ensemble doesn't feel complete.

Season 4 had one great episode and the rest of the season felt like fanfiction.

Season Five and Six had some decent episode and story lines but no where near as memorable as the first three seasons.

I get thinking it's worse and it's fair to think the yahoo episodes felt too long, they definitely feel that way. I think nowadays what happens is I already know going in that it's terrible so out of the wreckage I come away appreciating the small scenes here and there that are still funny. I mean heck even season 4 had like a scene or 2 that got a good-natured, sensible chuckle.

In S5's mild defense, it does have what might be my favorite diss of the series, when Prof. Duncan and Jeff are competing over Britta (quoting from memory as best I can):

"Sure, 'love's not a game,' says the guys who always win. You're like Dane Cook in those three movies Dane Cook made where he gets laid by accident. Only this time Jeff, it's not a Dane Cook movie, because someone's actually watching: me, your pal, British Jason Biggs."

The three eps in a row in the first halfNic Cage, ass crack bandit, and Cooperative Polygraphy. All hilarious. CP especially is a top tier episode.

Man saying season 6 was worse than 4 is nuts to me. I loved every episode except maybe the paintball one. The incest wedding episode was one of my favorite of the whole show.
