Now that i'm thinking about it, it's generally accepted nowadays that Bush was "a big dumb idiot" who surrounded himself by intelligent evil shitheads like Cheny who pulled his strings and ran the show. His politics aside, he always came across as a generally affable guy most people could get along with, whereas someone like Trump...well, we all know about him.

Same thing happened to John Howard over here. He was reviled at the time he was voted out, and we had one knockout Labour PM and a contested one after him. And since then, on the Liberal side since they've come back into power, we've had a string of populists, corporate lapdogs and corrupt buffoons.

Our current PM gags any and all dissent in the house, and he stonewalls the press on questions he doesn't like. John Howard had the basic human decency to address whatever the press threw at him.

Bush started a retaliatory war in the middle east and has been personally responsible for millions of people being killed and crippled, whether they be soldiers or civilians. And yet even his reign as President isn't as reviled as that stupid, blatantly corrupt motherfucker Donald Trump, because despite the cruelty of his administration and his portrayal as a buffoon, he simply isn't seen as much of a blatant moron and callous shithead as Trump has been. That's just how it is.

I remember the 2000s very clearly. As much as people shit on Trump (deservedly so), the media was doubly out to get Dubaya. There was an incompatible contradiction in the arguments against him. He was a pea brain who couldn't write or talk, yet he was also somehow the evil mastermind with a conspiracy to take over the world.

Although some people conceded that Chaney was still the brains of the operation, they still treated Bush like he personally was Hitler. All hope is lost, war is waged for religion and greed (those weren't Hitler's motivations but still, Bush Is Hitler!), the government is taking over, surveillance will weed out all who are unfaithful to the new order, and things will never ever get better again.

Then Saint Obama (praise be his name) was elected and America was a progressive post-racial society... until a man who actually used Hitler-esque rhetoric got elected. Then the mask was pulled off and America was and always had been a white supremacist nation at heart.

To be fair, at least they're not trying to pretend this time that all of America's problems have been erased the moment a Democrat became president. But how can they when the ex-president won't concede he's an ex-president and is presently talking about a military coup?

Judge him on how he used his power towards average people, and not on how polite he is towards other millionaires in person.

George Bush is like that stock movie plot where company executives promote the doofus to president hoping to control him from behind the scenes. But instead of him actually working to the benefit of the company and exposing the bad guys for what they are, reality happened. He sat eating pretzels while Chaney and company fought for oil.

Bush is a friendly guy. If you met him in person I'm sure he'd be a fun person to talk to. But he's done some terrible things as president.
