This is why the drug testing that cops do really needs to be revamped. They absolutely have to consider the fact that other substances may react in a similar manner to the drugs their looking for so that they don't throw someone in jail for possession of their loved ones' ashes.

Another topic about this. I asked in the last one and nobody actually said what they think the cops did wrong there. While finding drugs in his car they also found a small vial with some substance in it, they tested it and got an initial positive, cop talked to the guy and found out what it was and the guy's father had it within minutes of the cops finding out what it was.

because emotional reaction from clickbait headlines will always trump everything else. Never mind, this is already the fourth topic on this. But after the topic title of course everyone comes in already thinking cops intentionally grabbed a vial that was labeled ashes and then tested it anyways. Not the way you described it

If it's that little thing the cops were holding, it's not uncommon for grieving parents to keep a small vial of their children's ashes.

Unless you're going to say that it's not uncommon for grieving parents to keep their children's ashes in a small vial in their car along with their other drugs, then...

Vial is still an appropriate reference here. And if you just found that laying around (alongside other drugs?), not sure you would immediately think "oh, this has somebody's ashes in it".

Sure, but one still has to understand the fact that other substances may react similarly to a controlled substance in a drug test, which is why the testing that cops do for drugs in these situations needs to be rethought.

If the dude didn't bother to inquire about what they found in his car, he would have been charged for being in possession of his daughter's ashes.

So how can you immediately trust and identify something as an urn? Especially after just finding drugs on someone and theyre in custody and they try to snatch it away from you?

After the test the cop went to go ask the guy about it. The guy told him what was in it, the cop talked to him about it in a perfectly acceptable way, and the guy's father had the ashes roughly three minutes after the cop found out what it was. So, again, what did the cops do wrong here?

Absolutely, I think questioning the specificity and sensitivity of the tests is the appropriate thing here. But not sure the cop did anything wrong.

Yes, but how much of his daughter's ashes are we going to just be OK with being used for testing in this regard to find out that they're his daughter's ashes? And how long would we be OK with someone sitting in jail for being in possession of said ashes?

Why do people let officers search them if they have drugs? Why did a guy just admit to two homicides from 30 years ago, in the news. People say and do random shit. Regardless, its reasonable to assume the officers process. They give it back to him within minutes and the other officer says to just let this guy go because of the mistake. Theres no malice or wrongdoing here

He would be defined as people and that is awful. But refer to last sentence again. It was a mistake made during a probable cause investigation. Thats why their courts are not pursuing action against the officers. Its an unfortunate accident not an act of ill intent or malice

He only had a small amount of her ashes anyway so this seems like a bit of a stretch. The concern here seems to be that police mishandled the remains

My friend wore his mom aroumd his neck and he'd tell me people would make jokes about getting a bump >_>.

Which is kind of double sided. 1 side, it's not crazy to assume it's drugs. The other side is that it's not a fuckin unknown thing to use these urns and you should be trained to understand more than one perspective if you're gonna try to protect a whole fuckin district, town or city

Why would it matter if it's drugs or not at that point? This doesn't seem like a story since Im already desensitized to the whole "mistaken dead family member as drugs" thing irl. My boy didn't even have real drugs on him. I'm sure I'll be corrected again for not reading the story >_>

The person who posted the thing I responded to just mentioned it didn't look like an urn and I was clarifying. Didn't really comment on the situation itself, but if I had to: Field drug tests are unreliable especially in the presence of other drugs, but at the same time addicts do far worse. My uncle hid drugs in his house in his wife's urn. So, hard to say what the real situation there is, as I know a bag of something broke in the above situation so I'm absolutely sure that those ashes would've tested positive for drugs because they were in fact there, but so were the ashes.
