So I only really have time for video games on Sundays, and I need something that isn't too deep. Otherwise I'll forget half of the mechanics/controls by the time next Sunday rolls around

Any recommendations? I play on PC if that helps

Do you like Metroid? Do you also like roguelikes? Then try A Robot Named Fight. Each run takes about an hour to complete if you don't die, there's a metric fuckton of items and skills to unlock for future runs, and there are challenge modes like Mega Map that stitches every possible environment together into one massive hell-map. But the single runs are a lot of fun too.

There's a game called Gutwhale that came out recently, you can finish the game in under 2 minutes. Very lightweight, but pretty fun. Very barebones rogue like where you have one bullet, and you have to pick it up again before you can shoot again.

If you shoot a thing and catch the bullet before it hits the ground, you start a combo. A higher combo means more points to spend at the shop between levels.

You'll get about an hour out of the main experience, but you'll have a few solid runs in there. And there's an endless survival mode you can unlock too. It's like $5 on itch.io

Play Mark of the Ninja and Guacamelee, these games are great for what you're looking for. They're both pretty short, but really fun games that aren't too mechanically deep.

I actually had to look this up because I'm an uncultured heathen, didn't know Omensight was written by a guy who worked on Planescape: Torment. Based on that game's reputation (haven't played it myself) I wouldn't expect Omensight to be as deep or impactful, but I thought the story was good for what it was.

Last two recommendations:

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War: One of my favorite video game stories of all time, and if you're smart with how you pair up your gen 1 units you can make the gen 2 units into absolute monsters. My biggest gripe with the game is that maps are so large that a majority of the good units are on a mount of some kind, and any nonmounted units basically got left in the dust. Still think the story and most of the units being fun to use makes up for it though.

Iji: I remember having a lot of fond memories playing this game. Admittedly I haven't played it since 1.7 released, but even before then I thought that both kill and no-kill playthroughs were really fun in their own way. The story is pretty good too, and I love the soundtrack for this game. Wish it was popular enough for a commercial remake tbh, I think it deserves the Cave Story treatment more than Cave Story itself does.

Okay I lied I actually have one more recommendation: the Danganronpa games. Well, I can recommend the first two at least because those are the ones I actually beat. They have really colorful and varied casts that are fun to get acquainted with before they, you know, start murdering each other; I love the claustrophobic atmosphere of the first game in particular; and tbh I actually really like the gameplay in the Class Trials. Some of my favorite characters of all time are from this series. Special shoutout to Sakura Ogami from the first game, she's one of my favorite characters of all time.

Fair enough lol. Doesn't help that Class Trials get generally longer after the first game. Being able to save whenever you want does take off some of the pressure to do too much at once though.

So starting it up after a week, when I'm a forgetful person at the best of times >_>

Maybe try Days Gone? It will take you a long time if you're only playing in 20 minutes bursts, but the game let's you save anywhere, so long as you're near your bike, or a bed. Gameplay is mainly just shooting, so it's nothing too complex to remember week to week.

Sunset Overdrive is pretty fun too. Not a serious story like Days Gone, but lots of shooting mutated humans and unlocking new weapons.

When the Prince of Persia remaster comes out, I recommend that. It's a giant puzzlebox with some shoehorned action.

It's perfect for playing in half-hour chunks.

I'm watching JoJo and I'm reading the Monogatari books too

And no the backlog is ever-expanding. In the case of VLR, I got spoiled on something that's apparently a major spoiler the MC is an old man so I'm waiting until I forget that to play it

I mean the game treats that as a spoiler but it's really not a huge spoiler at all. Multiple characters make pretty frequent cracks about Sigma's age and generally fucked up appearance for someone who claims to be 22. One of the first things Phi says to him is grandpa for fuck's sake. So it's not exactly a well-kept secret, it's more so the context behind the spoiler that's a spoiler, if that makes sense. There are like...a lot worse things you could've had spoiled about this game. Just wanted to help you feel better about having something relatively minor spoiled for you!
