I tell ya, game development is a fascinating beast

https://tcrf.net/Prerelease:Banjo-Kazooie

Originally starred a human character named Edson who fought against giants/ogres, and later had pirates as the main villains (Rare games sure do feature a lot of pirates, no?)

It seems that after the project got too large, and seeing the progress made on Conker, they decided to switch over to an animal character and the game was scaled back into a typical action-platformer.

That would also explain why Jolly Roger Bay from Banjo Tooie has a pirate character in one of the bars. I'm pretty sure that pirate was originally in the Project Dream game (what BK used to be). The pirate even talks about how he once had a dream or something like that.

Diddy Kong Racing also had a replacement protagonist. It was originally going to be Pro-Am 64 (an update of an NES racing title) before Nintendo volunteered the use of a Donkey Kong Country character. Rare chose Diddy over D.K. because he was a character they created.

That's the interesting part to me. Some in-studio rivalry going on, took a peek at Conker and the Banjo team said, fuck, we gotta start over.

But somehow the Banjo team got their product out before the Conker team, and it wound up being a huge success and the Conker team had to hit the reset button.

Yup, and he's pictured among the paintings in Mad Monster Mansion.

It was weird playing BK as a kid and it being so awesome only to grow up some and kind of realize what a crappy genre overall it was a part of.

A while back a bunch of people on the internet decided DK64 was always a terrible game and the opinion kinda warped into the entire genre also being bad.

I don't know though, I liked my collectathon platformers and I'd still take them over most sidescrollers.
