I have A similar problem when looking for early 2000s hip hop.
Honestly though, current mainstream r&b is some hybrid of the two, which is why I mostly listen to 70s, 80s, and 90s r&b. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

Yeah growing up in the 90s they were very separate genres. However people like Mariah Carey popularised using a lot of hip hop artists on their tracks and they got closer and closer. Now you got hip hop artists that are indistinguishable from R&B and Pop people with their pretentious "experimental" crap. Personally I think hip hop should be kept raw and simple without any frills.
