I've been driving for what, 14 years now, and I've always bought cars for cash. Some were great, some were fucking terrible.

My current car - an 08 VW Passat, was doing pretty well. But I guess this is the year that all the electrics systematically fail one after the other.

I kind of hate the idea of being in ANY kind of debt though so this is bothersome. But man it would be fucking nice to have a routine car problem that can be resolved by warranty or a simple cheap service.

Just get a reliable Asian car

I've not had a single problem from 80k to 150k on my Subaru. Literally nothing

Get certified used at a dealership. Buying used car off people is a recipe for disaster. Literally pissing the money away when shit inevitably goes wrong.

I'm thinking of trying for a demo car, if that's still a thing.

Where are you getting this from? Most reliable cars are Toyota.

I want the Ariya in the worst way, but I'm definitely gonna wait until the 2nd or 3rd year given Nissan's track record.

You can always look for a used car dealer like Blue Knob Auto (PA only so probably not near you). I've got both my cars from them and from what I understand they buy leased cars off other dealers and then resell them. Both cars had <5k miles when I bought them, no cosmetic defects, and were significantly cheaper than buying from a dealer. Rather than messing with commissions and haggling they just set a price and sell a shit ton of cars a day - got my first car at end of business on Memorial Day a few years ago and the salesman was telling me how they had beat their goal for selling over 100 cars that day.

I think they still do that. Personally, I get something just off lease if I'm in the market for a newish car. Depreciation has kicked in and there's still at least 3 years of warranty.

Lately, I've been thinking of a 5-7 year old German car though. The styling doesn't change much. A lot of the new bells and whistles aren't for me and I prefer analog gauges to digital ones. YMMV.

If you're ignorant and know absolutely nothing about cars, it sure is. Kinda like buying anything really.
