The original upload is going to be removed from YouTube to be sold as an NFT. This makes me mad.

I don't care that it's an old meme, I care that it's a thing that can happen.
What's next?
Ultimate Showdown?
Gangnam style?
I work at burger king?
The evolution of dance?
Numa Numa?
Star Wars Kid?

I don't want to see bits of internet history lost for stupid reasons.

It would be a real shame if someone downloaded the video and reuploaded it to YouTube wouldn't it? It's good that they didn't give anyone warning that it was being taken down.

What i dont get is, why would someone buy that?

That "disaster girl" photo sold for like 500k. How would someone make money from owning this? Its not like there is a "charlie mania" going on or something. Nobody gives a shit about that video anymore.

Who says they want money from owning it? How much money does a painting generate for a collector in their private residence? What about antiques?

I mean yeah you could just buy a copy of the mona lisa for 1% of the price that will be indistinguishable from the real thing, but people want the original with proof of ownership. It's how it is now, and how it's always been

Doesn't really work that way with data...

It's literally the exact same code. Copies of art aren't identical to the original

Take a single example from his post:

Star Wars Kid: the fat teen who did a really bad lightsaber choreography thing in his garage; how much money do you think he made off that video? Next to none, yet others get to freely share it and make fun of him. Now he has the opportunity to sell the rights to this video (over a decade after it came out and jokes made about him) and... it wrong?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something here, I'll admit that. However why should these people not get paid for being humiliated on multiple platforms? Seems like common sense to me. They can now sell their (humiliating) brand.

I know you're a smart person, I've interacted with you enough to know that.

That's why I'm sad... you can have a copy of the Pamela Anderson/Tomy Lee Jones porn, but that doesn't mean you owe them money or have a legal right to money from every showing... but you COULD buy the rights off them and make money off it.

Bonus: Only one is had a legal route to money. Guess which one?

I still cannot wrap my head around the concept of these having any particular value. It's not actually a unique piece of media like an original painting. The Youtube video is the only thing that could even be called that, but that's literally being wiped out as a means of giving it value. All the other copies are just as valid and will still propagate. How does this accrue any actual value? Will we reach a point where we have NFT lawyers that go around the internet trying to use legal pressure to scrub it from the internet? Is it all just a fancy money laundering scheme?

Even if those rights are included with and transferred with the purchase, they're limited time value and only worth anything if the product is worth anything (which generally is not the case with memes at least). Short term selling, it can likely add value, but it's certainly something that is not going to constantly increase in value. This seems to be a market that has value only because a bunch of rich people have decided it has value and have bought into it. That's kind of the nature of anything intangible, but this seems really forced.

Yeah but that's Pamela and Tommy Lee

This is just some recording (granted it's adorable) of two kids made by some person

You're right though, I guess you could bank on Pepsi wanting to use that in part of a superbowl commercial. I just didn't imagine they were really pushing out junk like that but I mean it's TV and commerce so I guess so >_>

Still doesn't seem like a wise investment after a year or two if more videos get turned into NFT's since I imagine more popular memes would phase out this tame video

Doesn't matter, the point of NFT's are there might be multiple copies, but YOU are the only owner. You can buy a replica of the Mona Lisa for a few hundred dollars, or just print it from your printer yourself, but there's only 1 real copy in the world.

It's really stupid because it's just a digital code saying you own the thing.

But the real Mona Lisa is different from replications by a hell of a lot more than just a certification of authenticity

Original NFTs and their copied counterparts are literally identical

I genuinely dont get the appeal of buying literally nothing, which is what nfts basically are. At least if I buy a useless 1'1' plot of land in Scotland, I can put 'Lord' in my title. And that only costs like $40.

The guy who uploaded Star Wars Kid was not actually the Star Wars Kid, so he still wouldn't get any money. Didn't he get invited to a bunch of talk shows at the time?
And my problem isn't with them (Charlies parents) profiting, my problem is with it being removed suddenly. This time there is a warning but that won't always be the case.

That's what I'm afraid of too. Imagine suddenly getting a Cease And Desist for an old Facebook post that has a meme that someone happened to NFT.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm actually trying to learn here.

Maybe I'm getting to old and out of touch here, but I don't see why anyone would want these, and I dislike the thought of something being free suddenly being owned without warning which could cause others to get in trouble or no longer able to enjoy the thing.

They don't actually own the original video. It's just a vapid claim backed in this case by the original uploader removing it from its primary source as a means of false validity. It's possible to sell the trademark and/or copyright at the same time, but it's not something that can be directly attached to the NFT.
