Ehh, pretty even toss-up in that regard imo

There's nothing on Playstation to compare with banjo-kazooie, nothing to compare with GoldenEye and nothing to compare with Ocarina of Time. The PlayStation rather objectively beats the N64 in rpgs, though.

I played both growing up (buddy had a PS1) and the N64 had far more fun multiplayer titles and top games.

And as much as the N64 controller was kinda not that great, I kinda prefer it these days to the PS1 at least.

The Spyro games were easily best western-developed platformers of that gen for my money, Mario 64 stays winning though. PS1 wins the 2D platforming war by a mile obvi, though Kirby 64's still a certified hood classic & I really need to get around to Goemon's Great Adventure someday.

nothing to compare with GoldenEye and nothing to compare with Ocarina of Time.

Can't comment on the former since FPS' aren't really my thing but that does seem like the main genre where the N64 stomped its competition. PS1 probably didn't have anything with OoT's scope/visuals but there's some SquareSoft games in a similar vein like Threads of Fate/Brave Fencer Musashi that look fun. Idk I'll get back to you when I play through the Mega Man Legends games, I'm 1.5 hours into the first one now.

The PlayStation rather objectively beats the N64 in rpgs, though.

And a lot of other genres like shmups, survival horror, rhythm, etc. due to lack of JP support & a lot of those being more eastern-oriented. The few Japanese games the N64 did get make me sorrowful for what could've been...

I feel like everyone just ignores Ape Escape when it's easily one of the better platformers of the generation.

Goldeneye absolutely does not hold up today

Perfect Dark was better. Just because the PS1 doesn't have a comparable game in the FPS category doesn't discredit it. The N64 doesn't have a game that comes close to FF7 or MGS1

goldeneye is still just as fun now as it was then. yes, perfect dark is obviously far superior, but nothing even sort-of-kind-of approached either of them on the psx

basically the n64 and the psx excelled at different things. The N64 was better for platformers, FPS, and sports games. The psx was better for rpgs, survival horror and anything trying to present itself as big and cinematic. On a few things like racing games they sort of met in the middle.

Both of them are two of the greatest consoles ever

I feel bad for Nintendo, they had strong quality control grips on games and that led to game developers moving their games to other systems. The Wii had the least amount of quality control, which led to a shit ton of shovelwares. I mean at least the Switch now kind of has the best of both worlds considering how well it is selling.

Soul reaver definitely competes in visuals and scope, though the game play itself is a little bit more of a corridor adventure. They had to do some serious work to get it working on ps1

No they dont. I can break out N64 with a bunch of people over and everyone is down.

Nobody wants to play PS1 anymore.

Yeah, N64 was the undisputed king of multiplayer back in the day. Not just 4 players, but the best games for it. Mario kart and diddy kong racing, goldeneye and perfect dark... and who can forget legendary games like Smash Bros and Mario party?

The quality of games on N64 was absurd. PS1 had a lot more variety and a better controller once the dual shock came out, though, which is probably why it sold so well.

The only argument to be made is PlayStation had RPG's galore and Nintendo had Paper Mario and the hot garbage that was Quest 64

The N64 is one of the only Nintendo consoles where nearly everything worth playing (and it's not a lot) has been rereleased or remade in some form.

this makes me realize i'm glad i personally owned a psx while i only knew buddies that had n64... otherwise i would probably find myself clinging to a select handful of titles trying to convince myself and others that those alone beat out an astounding number of quality games that are still getting remakes or updates today.
