Pretty crazy that for the past 25 years, the trend with Nintendo has been the same: Their first party games are great and worth owning the console for, but they barely have anything else. Just the occasional 1 or 2 gems from 3rd parties.

Started with the N64 and hasn't changed since.

But hey those meager 5 N64 games still hold up to this day, while most ps1 games... less so. Graphically, performance wise, loading times, cumbersome controls... be it jrpg or action adventure, most ps1 games are borderline unplayable if you're used to the modern era

The PS1 controller is decrepit and feels weird now. And yeah you're limited to two controllers, not to mention almost every single good game is available on PSN in some form or another.

No such luck with old nintendo games. I mean did they EVER re-release any of the n64 stuff?

The N64 is one of the only Nintendo consoles where nearly everything worth playing (and it's not a lot) has been rereleased or remade in some form.

And all of them combined don't add up to the popularity of one N64 multiplayer hit. I had every console growing up(every one) and the only consoles where everyone gathered to play in person at one house for were the N64 and the Gamecube, with the Xbox coming a distant third. No multi-tap parties ever. Ever. Smash bros and Mario Kart and the GC version of PSO though......lit.

Brother, i'm done and will NOT go back and forth with you. Looking at a sales chart is EASY and then factoring in that there MANY friends don't need to OWN the game to play will tell you how much more popular the N64 heavy hitters were. That's why the crash franchise ultimately died off lol. Even Sony didn't think it was worth keeping around and looked to make other "mee too" competitors to Nintendo's lineup as time went on.

PS1 games still hold up well. The platforming and JRPGs are timeless.

What N64 games are worth playing with that shit mutant controller these days?

All of their first party games have been regurgitated over and over every generation to a much better form.

That and all the eras multiplatform games sucked on the 64 and were neutered in some way.

It did have a few hits, but compared to the PS1 it was slacking.

Because there are lots of fun ps1 4 player games. Just these two games are equal to any of those games individual game sales. The disparity isn't nearly as big as you think it is. That's all. Nothing against n64

MM was not considered a success internally as it only sold half of what OOT did and sales were always MUCH slower since laiunch. OOT sold over a million in 7 days, MM sold like 300K in the same time.

Berother, why are you doing this? why?

Like your choice more, have the favorite it's fine. Stop obfuscating, you won;t name driopMK or SSb because you know they blow out PS whole lineup for multiplayer and popularity.

It did 1.9 million in the US alone before it was rereleased as a best seller. And at least 300k in Japan before that point. The guiness book of world records implies it did 4.79 million worldwide on the original platform...I believe you don't understand how much better the ps1 sold than N64 to find this unbelievable

I mean, they hold up as well or better than 2d games before ps1 just objectively speaking. They're more modern and more polished than anything on snes. I guess if you think 2d gaming in general didn't hold up then sure

Edit: though even then I think you're nuts to say something like a rare collectathon holds up better than like symphony of the night

Well going even further back just reduces the amount of playable games by half.

Sure you've got classics like Sotn that still hold up, but you also have games like alundra that don't. It's not about the graphics, it's about how the game plays and mechanics of it.

Edit: Oh lol we had the same idea of sotn, yeah that seems about right.

But no I most certainly don't mean crappy rareware games, those are 2nd party and I was talking about the handful 1st party from nintendo themselves. Although rare games were 3d so I actually don't know why you're bringing them up *shrugs*

*shrugs* if you dislike them then you dislike them. It doesn't stop them from being one of the greatest games of all times and above the need of lesser games to "hold up" because they'll always be fun as heck to play. Games were still being influenced by them and their mechanics up to this day.

Then I guess it's just down to taste. It reminds me of the debates about trying to convince others that "crash was better than mario!" and I was thinking I don't know why I have to be, like, bipartisan about it, I enjoy both and don't really do favorites.

Because it goes without saying that they don't just "hold up" like some arcade game from the 90s, they're beyond great games. Arguing otherwise is just being intentionally controversial. Sure you might like more obscure games that were not as well known, but dismissing the giants of gaming doesn't make them any less giant.

Well I didn't want to outright say that I remember those games and they were really meh, even back then. Knowing someone else likes them that much just makes me remember some people are fine with less than games. It'd be like someone saying they prefer, I dunno, Threads of Fate to Kingdom Hearts 1. I can't do anything about changing their mind if they've convinced themselves of it.
