Certain people are trying to be inclusive and progressive too hard. Their hearts might be in the right place, but they just go too far sometimes.

Latinx is awkward and I am no fan of the term, especially since it has no real traction in the Latino community.

But we all know the virulent, extreme hatred of the term is coming from bigots who just want to oppose any gender inclusive language.

Since Latinx was created at a university by Puerto Ricans, it's no surprised most people don't use it. How many other terms are used at the college level that most people don't use?

Yep. Latino friends who aren't in academia don't use it, but none of them are frothing at the mouth every time it comes up.

Latin X, like a comic book character. It's an utterly alien construction to Spanish, ignoring the phonetics of the language in favor of virtue signaling. Basically certain college types think, "-o is deemed masculine and thus not inclusive and must be shunned as a result."

idk why people try to push latinx when the better part of latin america really clearly doesn't like it, and they get to defensive about it too. that twitter feed has a bunch of people posting screenshots of latinos getting explained to why they're "wrong" and then blocked when they push back

Using male terms as "gender neutral" is one of the things gender inclusivity is trying to do away with. Like using "they" instead of "he" when the gender is unspecified or the person is nonbinary.

Nice try though.

Very much so. The idea that white people are trying to force it on to latinos is a myth. But it is definitely very much from the English speaking latino community and it's understandable that the Spanish speaking latino community doesn't want to use it.

Ah didnt see your post before posting, my bad. If a small elite group of latinxs with authority on what latinxs should be referred to by the world decided latinx is the proper term then Im more than happy to refer to them as such. I dont know how most latinxs feel about this but if that group of academics with linguistic authority decided its the proper term that settles it.

apologies if Im misusing the term, I dont know how to pluralize it

It's due to a confusion between grammatical gender and the modern social concept of gender. Grammatical gender refers to gender meaning type (same Latin wrote as genre) and languages can have many different kinds, the masculine and feminine distinction do not necessarily have anything to do with the modern social concept of gender (which was only formulated starting in the 70s, the name of gender is unfortunate, but it is what it is). Spanish has for example to word femenino, meaning feminine. You will notice it has the masculine grammatical gender, but the meaning is still feminine in terms of social gender. It's very confusing due to he terms overlapping in English, but grammatical gender does not necessarily have anything to do with whether or not a word is gendered in the social sense.
