I was looking at logical fallacy examples, and one of them was appeal to motive. But is this actually a logical fallacy, because I feel it actually is truthful in many situations.

Informal logical fallacies seem to be more or less good rules of thumb for debate class. They're the things you hear about all the time, "ad hominem", "appeal to authority", "strawman".

Formal logical fallacies are actual errors of reasoning. Affirming the consequent, for example.
