and I'm MEGA nervous for it. It's for a life insurance underwriting manager role. Normally I'm very confident in interviews because I'm good at what I do, very knowledgeable about my area, and am highly personable. However there is going to be an hour long section with a medical doctor quizzing me on medical conditions and the whatnot, which I don't have much history in. I've been in accounting/finance my whole career and this is branching out a bit.

Time to study some anatomy and mortality statistics!

Good luck tc. For my current job I had a 3 hour interview over zoom with 5 different people. It was hell but hey, I got the job and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Hopefully it'll be the same for you.

that sounds tough. how have you been preparing? you might be able to find an online community of life insurance underwriters (there's always a subreddit for that) where you can ask for guidance / advice.

I work for a life insurance underwriting department (I'm a financial consultant)! So typically I would have a whole medical manual to study from, but my system access has been temporarily shut off during paternity leave. My leave ends tomorrow so I'll be able to cram some. Otherwise I've been reading some insurance medical exam review books online.

Is it a good job w/ pay/etc to make it worth the huge interview?

Consider that, if you got the interview you got that job.
Go into it with that mindset.

I mean that most certainly isn't the case. The longer an interview, the more a company is actually vetting you.

And I'm not nervous about the actual interview. I consider them performances just like tests, music shows, etc and i excel in those circumstances. I'm really just stressed about the medical preparation.

Understandable.
If anything be frank about your skills, if you show promise, but need guidance that can work.

Do you have a job now?

Good luck man! This might be classically silly advice, but if you're nervous, practice in front of the mirror. It really does calm your nerves.

While you're in front of the mirror, rehearse a couple things to say if you don't know an answer. That way if you do mess up an answer, you can still play it off successfully.

Then good. You have something.
That takes a ton of pressure off.

Ya, just give yourself a primer on what you think you might need to know.
Don't come off as less confident, but make it relatively clear that you understand this is a new skill set.

Nothing pretty much! I'm in a different position, but I have plenty of insight. Most insurance companies only want a 4 year degree or prior insurance experience of any sort. I know people who were hired with finance degrees, life science degrees, political science, chemistry, English, etc. A lot of companies will hire like 10 people at a time and put them in a classroom for like 10 weeks to teach them the basics. There are a lot of different types of insurance underwriting you can do as well: life, health, property and casualty, group life, mortgage, and more!

It's a great start to a career. Automation will be a concern in the future, but it's a good-paying first step into a lucrative industry for a lot of people with different backgrounds.

At the end of the day, I do like what you are doing. You are completely branching out and that is a great thing.

Keep within that mindset, you will be in a better place this time next year.
Stay comfortable knowing you have your fallback position.
