I loved my 64 growing up but aside from the AAA titles, most games on the platform have aged like shit.

Theres a reason that good SNES games cost a fortune and N64 games are generally bargains. Its an inferior system to its predecessor.

People overrate the PS2. Yes the top tier games were amazing and revolutionary but the far, far majority were average or worse and an average PS2 game is awful today.

Also that was when gamers were really weird about cartoony games and 2D games.

I understand what you're saying but I think it applies generally and not just to the ps2. So I disagree that it's a reason the ps2 is overrated.

I'd also push back a little on the 2d thing. Not a ton of new 2d games (though not none either) but that was the era we finally started getting acceptable arcade ports. That was a big deal to me earlier in the systems lifespan

It applies to most systems yes but I do think the average game from 360/PS3 onwards are overall better.

I'm critical to the point where I don't really have a system that I consider the best. There's always something that makes me thing 'But....'

Trying to rank consoles seriously is just a weird project. It's fun to try but only if you don't take it too seriously. The thing is the irl success of consoles relies on a lot of stuff the audience never sees directly so just looking at game quality is sort of misguided

"Average" is a meaningless metric though.

The average PC game is garbage.

What matters is quantity of quality hours of entertainment. Not the average of its entire large library.

Yeah the good JRPG's overall age well and hold up and PS2 has a lot of them.

I don't think mascot platformers were as good as the PS1/N64 ones but they're fine.

WRPG's were non-existent

Open world games overall haven't aged well. San Andreas is probably the best

Third person shooters that are still good are basically just Resident Evil 4 and the PSP ports of Syphon Filter. The far majority have clunky controls.

FPS games were better on Xbox/PC. Only a couple on PS2 are really worth going back to like Timesplitters and the 007 ones.

Action games like God of War 1/2, DMC3 and the Prince of Persia trilogy are still worth playing

ICO and Shadow of the Colossus are still classic

Survival horror games like Silent Hill 2/3 are still worth playing

Arcade racers like Burnout are still great

I think that covers almost everything that's still worth playing today. If you're a big Japanese game fan then yeah I can see it being the best. But for the most part most of that huge library is awkward to play these days.

Don't forget fighting games. Soul Calibur 2 and 3, Virtua Fighter 4 Evo, Def Jam:FfNY, Guilty Gear X2 etc.

It has really innovative, if not totally enjoyable, light gun games (on top of the standard good arcade ports). Though I haven't gotten around to ps2 yet with my sinden guns. This topic makes me want to.

this is the right take. the gameplay had a few flashes, but that was it. i was tipped off to the design being iffy when i first got attacked by bees that would never hit me if i never stopped moving forward.

one of those flashes to me was actually an underwater segment with constant instadeath. the section leading up wasn't bad either, but i last played it in the 2000s soooooo.

All jokes aside, N64 might actually be the best console. It's a complete package. Basically everyone agrees what its best games are, so there's a kind of shared experience thing going on with it.

Ask for the best games for the PS2 or 360, and there will be no consensus.
