XY had a ton of potential and a 3rd version could have made it great, but modern Gamefreak's modus operandi is doing just enough to be mediocre.

Gen 5 had terrible Pokmon battle sprite animation and made even uglier whenever the camera zoomed in & out. Thank god they made the jump to 3D sprites with gen 6.

I didn't mind Sun/Moon and Sword/Shield but I kinda feel like it peaked with the generation that did physical/special split.

Small tidbit but I didnt realize the amount of character customization XY had until post game. You can pimp your character out from head to toe. Then in the next game they killed it almost completely for some reason.

That's how Game Freak rolls. Introduce a very cool feature one gen, and then either gut it or outright remove it next gen.

It's a shame they do that with the Pokemon themselves now too.

Yeah, the best example is, ironically, perhaps in X/Y and ORAS: the PSS system, which was a fantastic means to handle online interactions.

Sun and Moon at least tried to do a few things differently, even if it only really hit with Team Skull.
And USUM at least has a pitch-perfect cameo from the best villain.

I will die on this hill.

Not to say X&Y were bad, they're the most replayable 3D games aside from SWSH, but they're still not as good as BW/2

Storywise it peaked with Black, White, Black 2 and White 2, combat gameplaywise we are actually at it's peak with Sword and Shield(Sorry fanboys but Dynamax is more balanced than Mega Evolutions, Primal Reversions and lol Z Moves was never as good as either of those), creativity and innovation wise it peaked long ago probably with Diamond, Pearl and Platinum.

Yep. I've actually had to go back to my Gen 6 games because I recently got my nephew X and Omega Ruby. It is so, SO, SO much better than the near-unfunctional garbage that is Sword/Shield's Y-Comm.

Hell, even the Festival Plaza in Gen 7 is better than Y-Comm, even if it has its own problems.

Dynamax is not even close to balanced in singles. Doubles maybe but it's literally 3 turns of Mega Evolution and Z moves that also boost stats, or set terrain, or set weather. Only one Z move ever set terrain, mews.

Mega Evolution is the most balanced of these three because it's predictable. If someone brings a Lugia, Hooh, and a regular Beedrill, you know with 99% certainty that it's a Mega.

With Dynamax any pokemon with insane offensive stats can bring a flying type move and become nigh unstoppable.

Z moves are also more balanced than Dmax, but not by much. If Ninjask can OHKO a Heatran, I think the balance is thrown off.

Mega Evolution while predictable, is not more balanced because it increases various stats by significant amounts. Dynamax only increases current HP and Max HP and grants access to Max Moves, which can be a double edged sword if you Dynamax at the wrong time because you lose access to your regular moves. Lastly Ninjask isn't one shotting Heatran without some setup for buffs / Baton Pass, even with Dynamax.
