Even on nightmare the games are easy enough to break that you can mostly just play with whatever style you enjoy. I mostly used Sara, Alisa, and Laura when available in the early games, with ~~Duvalie~~ taking a spot in 4. The combat is like a less refined version of Ys 8, not saying it's bad though. It also has a gameplay feature that's sorta like Trails' orbment system. The combat is way different as its real-time and not turn-based. You choose 3 party members for each dungeon and can swap between them at any time with just a button press. Each has their own unique weapon and movement and an associated element and every enemy has an elemental weakness so ideally you are swapping often to exploit that.
