I listened to Senator Schumer's speech where he recounted this country's shameful history of Jim Crow laws. And he's right, Jim Crow laws were bigoted, racist, and disenfranchised millions of people. It is worth remembering that those Jim Crow laws were drafted by Democrats, they were implemented by Democrats, and they kept Democrats in power. Now, today's talking point repeated in the media is that was the Democrats of yesterday, not today. Well, today, the Democrats are doing it again, this legislation, to use a phrase that has been popularized on the media recently, is Jim Crow 2.0. This legislation would disenfranchise millions of Americans.

It isn't that amazing.

They know that if everybody votes they'll never sniff Federal power again

Ted Cruz should be reminded that all of those Democrats defected to the Republican party once the Democrats got behind tackling racial injustice.

What's really crazy to me is that I know people who knew Cruz before he went into politics and they all universally thought he was a brilliant guy and very rational. They both said something to the effect of "I don't know what the hell happened to make him this way."

Which makes me wonder if Trumpism literally causes brain damage.

I'm too lazy to actually read up on this; how would helping millions of people to vote disenfranchise people? Like, I know it's just haunted conservative boglin Ted Cruz, but is there something I'm missing?

If only Ted Cruz bothered to study history he would understand what he's actually saying here, lol

For his supporters it doesn't matter if it makes sense or not. What GOP leaders say is the truth, regardless of fact.

I regularly have to remind myself that a lot of politicians almost have to be smart people. Like it takes a degree of intelligence and cunning (and lots of money) to actually get into these positions of power. Ted Cruz probably isn't dumb but he is incredibly greedy and power hungry and will say whatever he needs to say to keep that power and influence.

Like I don't believe that all the politicians voting against climate change legislation really believe that all these scientists are wrong and that humans have no impact. They very likely do. They just don't care and will say whatever they gotta say to keep their donors happy.

Jim Crow then: Voting laws implemented by Democrats to stay in power.

Now Democrats are pushing voting laws and should those laws pass it will help Democrats maintain power.

See? It is the exact same. Just ignore the context and the fact that the laws are complete opposites. That isn't the important part.

Lindsay Graham is probably the best example of a politician who knows better but still goes full Trump for the votes.

It is incredible that the talking point is now that more access to voting will disenfranchise voters' rights.

Break this down and basically what they are saying, is Republicans have had x amount of value to their votes due to all of the gerrymandering and voter suppression that the GQP have done. And now that the Democrats are fighting to make it easier for people to exercise their right to vote, the Republican voters, whose votes are not being suppressed, will be disenfranchised.

He's literally saying, by allowing the Democrats the ability to vote, our cheating tactics won't work and your vote won't matter anymore because the Democrats will win.

This is bananas

So basically, he's saying that equalizing people's ability to vote will devalue the votes of a subset of those who already can?

That's absolutely f***ing insane.

He's not outright saying it like this, but reading between the lines, I don't see how else this could be taken. And the base that he's speaking to just hears the buzz words and just assume that what the Democrats are doing is bad because that's how these people are leading their flock
