I use a NAS primarily for backup. I'm using an LG N2B1. It has 2 hard drive bays supporting JBOD, RAID 0 and 1, an eSATA port for an additional external hard drive, a BD-RE drive, a 4-in-1 card reader, and a USB port. It has DLNA, FTP, AFP, and Web servers, a network printer, iTunes streaming service, Time Machine, iSCSI, and built-in torrent capability. It's been discontinued by the manufacturer, but it's still a pretty decent little machine.

I have two 2.0 TB drives in a RAID 0 for a total of 4 TB available storage; it's currently 57% full.

Nah, I just use a combination backing up on external USB drives and cloud storage. So basically if something dies I have 2 back-ups of my data to pull from. I also try to replace my USB drives every 5 years since they are so cheap nowadays.

Basically what I've been doing for 10 years.

I still have the big fat Seagate 1TB wall plug drive I bought 10 years ago...still works great even though the transfer speeds are poo. I just use it to force my friends to look at my music library.

Cloud is probably the best route to go.
