to be fair, the Western animation movie industry thrives by ripping off other peoples IPs lol

It was super popular like 30 years ago, and still big in Japan--they recently made a live action show about his granddaughter. Also, have you checked out the show on Netflix about the guy it was based on, Lupin?

Same reason Detective Conan failed in the US. People like more serial anime and Lupin is episodic.

I have to assume you mean in America because its beloved in japan

and the answer is its old and by the time anime got popular in the us it was mainly due to fighty shounen stuff. Old episodic gag stuff like lupin or doctor slump or gegege no kitaro were old and out of style at that point

Lupin is actually good, though. But it's just a cartoon.

Well it didn't matter, because when the oldest anime generation was properly introduced to it, they were getting stuff like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Dragon Ball Z, and Outlaw Star, all serial.

Lupin came out at a weird time for the West. While older anime fans were getting the above, the kids were getting Pokemon, and while Pokemon was more episodic, it was airing in places kids watched, and those places were not going to air Lupin.

So ultimately we just kinda missed the boat. Lupin may be classic and iconic, but it's still pretty much just the same thing no matter how many new series or movies they release, so when you frame it next to anime that truly break out, it gets lost in the weeds.

One place that didn't miss the boat is Italy. Italy loves Lupin and the production company recognized that so much that they made an entire season of the more recent series set in Italy. I still don't know what coincided to make that happen but I'd imagine the old series were running in a popular spot on Italian TV.

Lupin is more like a western show than other animes so I'm surprised it's not more popular here

I remember Adult Swim had a minor melty via its commercial bumpers once, lol. (Those old white text on black background things)

They complained that fans would annoy them whenever they dumped Lupin on some dead 3AM timeslot, but never actually watch the show when they aired it at a better time. >_>

As for Conan, I heard that whoever was running the station disliked that show specifically and had a hand in killing its chances on Adult Swim. But thats just an ancient rumor, cant back it up with anything lol
