I had our highest ranking engineer spend about 15 minutes insulting me in an open space at work. What would be a good way to regain the respect of my coworkers after this? I don't want them to see me as an incompetent team member.

I'd suggest to invite someone into a private space when these things happen. I would never take it out in the open for 15 minutes and not push back at a job.
