God this holds up. So well.

The very first episode has action, detective work, humor, a mystery, and a character that wasn't used very much at all in the comics up to that point.

Haven't watched in like 10 years, but the last time I tried watching it, yeah, was genuine quality. (Mostly)

Still kind of crazy how much this show influenced the "main" Batman canon, when most other superhero shows are lucky if they even get a throwaway reference in the source material. (Tbh I'm a bit disappointed the Krypton/Brainiac backstory from Superman TAS didn't keep, as it's arguably better than the 80s post-crisis Krypton origin, or any other version of it that they've made since.)

Wasn't the pilot of TAS the ManBat episode? That one was pretty good. I usually prefer the pulpy sci-fi cheese in Batman to the grounded gangster stuff. The golden age Monster Men story is still one of my favorites.

I loved that Man-Bat episode.

There seems to be some confusion on the pilot. Some sources list On Leather Wings (Man-Bat), some list The Cat and the Claw Pt. 1 (Catwoman and Red Claw), and some list Christmas with the Joker (Joker). I believe HBO Max recognizes The Cat and the Claw as the first sequential episode.

Every release distributed by Warner Bros. (y'know the production company) lists On Leather Wings as the pilot and the first production episode. There's commentary on the episode where Bruce Timm's voice says "this is the pilot".

Christmas with the Joker was the first episode aired. I don't know what criteria would put Cat and the Claw first.

If you look at the first aired date Cat & Claw was aired first in September 5th. The man bat episode was the 6th which was a Sunday and I remember it being on like right before the Simpsons or something at night because I was excited af. I know they later did the same with the Robin origin episodes.

So maybe they ran a Saturday preview episode or something idk.

On Leather Wings is definitely the pilot. There's a Justice League Unlimited episode called Epilogue which is the latest episode of the entire continuity which intentionally bookends Man-Bat flying by a GCPD blimp with Terry flying past a future GCPD blimp.

Also, in the first episode Batman has a bathookthing tied to a rope to swing around.

Later on is when he got the one-handed cable-grapple-thing.

Just because an episode is a pilot, that doesn't necessarily mean it's the first one aired. All a pilot technically means is that it's the one submitted to the studio for approval.

Usually, there's some kind of weirdness. Smithers is Black in The Simpsons, Marshal Dillon has a different office in the pilot of Gunsmoke, etc. In Batman's case, the pilot positioned Harvey Dent like he was going to be a recurring character. And that didn't really happen. He only had one more episode before they turned him into Two-Face.

There's enough minor continuity to indicate that the production order is the right one though.

For instance, Cat and the Claw is a two-part episode. If you watch the airing order, the first part is the first episode and the second part is the eighth episode.

I dug out my boxset of all 3 seasons a couple months back, I'd love to do a watchthrough as well with other people rather than alone if interested.

Was anyone else terrified of that episode though as a kid? I laugh now but honestly, kirk's transformation was pure nightmare fuel not gonna lie.

And yet weirdly Man-Bat is always one of my favorites.

I've always figured Mask of the Phantasm and Sub Zero should both be after finishing the original animated seasons and before "New Batman Adventures" with the art style change.

I'm still pissed that the comics fairly recently ruined Mr Freeze by retconning his TAS origin to make him a creepy stalker for a girl he likes rather than doing it for his actual wife. It totally ruins the tragedy of the character.

Batman Annual (vol. 2) #1 introduces a new origin for Mr. Freeze. Here, Victor Fries' fascination with cryonics began when he was a boy and his mother fell through the ice of a frozen lake. The ice was able to keep her preserved long enough for help to arrive, thus sparking his lifelong obsession with the cold. It is later revealed that the accident left Fries' mother in constant pain, and Fries ended her suffering by pushing her into the same frozen lake. In this new origin, Nora was never Fries' wife. Her name was Nora Fields, a woman born in 1934. When Nora was 23, she was diagnosed with incurable heart disease, so her family placed her in cryogenic stasis hoping that a cure would be found in the future. Fries, having written his doctoral thesis on Nora, took on a position as a cryogenic researcher and technician at Wayne Enterprises, the facility that housed Nora's body. Eventually, he fell in love with Nora and became dedicated to finding a reliable method for slowly thawing cryogenic subjects. However, Bruce Wayne ordered the project to be shut down, as he began to feel uncomfortable with Fries' obsession with Nora. Furious, Fries hurled a chair at Wayne, who dodged the attack; the chair smashed into an array of cryonic chemical tanks, the contents of which sprayed onto Fries and transformed him into Mr. Freeze.[

Where you watch Mask of Phantasm doesn't really matter at all in my opinion. Could even be the first thing you watch. But Sub-Zero really matters. It should be after the BTAS Freeze episodes and definitely has to be before TNBA, which has another Freeze episode that kind of diminishes the plot of Sub-Zero.
