It sort of seems like the GTA clone that chugs along but never really breaks out in the same way some of the others have had.

I really enjoyed Mafia 1 back in the day. The stuff with the traffic laws seemed so advanced for the time. Funny that basically no other game copied it. Hard as nails at time though.

I also enjoyed Mafia 2. A bit more streamlined and the open world was overall pointless but the story was a fun ride.

Never got around to Mafia 3 personally due to the shoddy launch and reputation of repetitive missions. it's a shame because it sounds like there's a lot to love with the game but I don't think Mafia really needed the enemy outpost style missions.

Now I'm starting the remake and it seems really good. It's probably one of the better remakes I've played with both being accurate to the original but also feeling modern to play. But damn I have seen no buzz at all since release. I have the trilogy so I might play through all of them to see how they connect.

I only played 3 because it was free on PS Plus a while back. Most of the launch issues have been fixed by then. It was repetitive but overall I enjoyed it. Wouldnt have paid full price for it though. Id give it a solid 7.5/10.

I liked the 60s setting and the soundtrack mostly. Combat and driving were okay.

I liked the original. I own but have never played the second.

3 was okay but generic as hell

other sandbox games surpassed it

2 was okay but i kinda hate how some of the 'open-world' games at the time is not as fun as gta san andreas

Only played 3 when it was on PSN+, good game and good story, but repetitive and while the world is open its sparse.

3 was fun if for nonother reason than you got to massacre klansmen and neo-confederates. Goddamn if the game wasn't repetitive though.

Mafia 3 was way better than 2 in terms of story, characters and things to do outside of story missions.

Up until the recent trilogy released I had only played the first one and I loved it. The remake is probably one of the best remakes I've played. Now I've played through all of them and 3 is by far my favorite. I legit don't understand why people didn't like it.

Playing through the remake on Classic and I can't believe the race mission is still just as bad if not worse.

It's not so bad once you get the hang of it, but I did find it impossibly hard on classic. That's one of only two parts where I had to adjust the difficulty mid-game

Yeah I looked at the guides for it that told you precisely how to drive and take turns and thought fuck that I'm not spending an hour learning this for a 5 minute race where you make one mistake and you've lost. Just turned it down to medium.

I don't remember the original being that hard but I played it a long time ago and I played the version where the difficulty for that mission was patched.

One thing I like about Mafia is that the violence seems more visceral and bloody. Definitive Edition is great with this. Getting a headshot looks brutal.

In the remake you can cut a few corners that the AI doesn't use. But in Classic Mode the other cars are faster than the player which seems pretty bullshit. Doesn't even really match the story.

I remember in the first Mafia, there's a mission where you have to kill a guy (Can't remember why). But three times in a row, every thing you do fails just from pure dumb luck. There's some thing with a train, and one where you put a bomb on his car, but then his wife gets in instead! I can't remember how it finally ends, I think you just chase him down and shoot the fuck out of him lol.

Only played the third one, but it was pretty fun...as long as it stuck to the main missions. Most of the in-betweener side jobs were repetitious and crappy, ruining a lot of the momentum.

I've played Mafia on the PS2, Mafia 2 on PC, and Mafia 3 and all DLC on the PS4. Never beat 1 and 2, but I did beat the hell out of 3. I loved it. It felt like The Punisher: Bayou or something. They are decent games with good stories. 3 just went a bit ham on the open world being where you do everything so it felt very repetitive, but it was a fun pick up and play game.

Mafia 2 was pretty good and a fun game.

Mafia 3 was ok but way to much for repetitive missions outside of the main story.

Yeah Mafia 3 takes forever to play through, but I'm a sucker for map takeover games so I found it very compelling. Plus it was pretty cool tackling all the various rackets in each district.

It could have been fun to conquer if they had more variety, the repetitive missions got old fast and it is why I stopped playing the game.

There was not a lot of free-roaming involved, but that is not what the story was going for anyway...

Have played all 3.

Platinumed M2 (on ps3) and M3 (ps4).
I love the open worldness of the map on M3.
It just needs things to do on the map.
And the soundtrack could use about 40 more songs because hearing the same 5 songs is annoying.

I wish 3 stuck to the linear focus in story so I could get through it. I always get so into the beginning and then never make it to the next significant part of the story cause it's so fuckin boring and tedious

Played them all. Playing the Mafia 1 remake right now. Looks great. Somewhat hatd. There aren't really a lot of games out there these days that operate like this one.

I like all the games, especially the storytelling, but Mafia 3 is unfortunately repetitive.

Sandbox games need to die

worst trend in gaming
The Mafia series isn't much of a sandbox. The world is mostly just there as a backdrop to make the whole thing feel more alive.

I loved 2 though. Great game. I only hated the ending. But apart from that it was amazing

I played 3 because it was free on ps plus. Very repetitive, but I thought the story was presented very well. It was enough to get me interested in the definitive editions of 1 and 2. Great games overall.

I wouldn't really say they're like GTA though. 1 and 2 are very story focused, not really intended for open world exploration.

I just wish the DLC wasn't fucking awful and actually added to the story

Playing a remake like Mafia where it's a game that you don't really know like the back of your hand is surreal sometimes. Currently on the brothel mission that mentions that your buddy is going to the Church to assassinate somebody. I thought "Hmm I'm sure there was a really tough section in a Church in the original" and sure enough I'm now in a really tough section in a Church Surprised at how faithful Classic mode seems to old school game design. Very much have to remember the placement of enemies in a lot of these shootouts.
