Well I didn't start with any of those. I basically brought them into the office and talked through the situation that I was firing them for, and once we talked through it I say something like "And you understand why that's unacceptable, and the reason I'm going to have to let you go?"

It generally works really well and doesn't start things off instantly hostile.

Hell I've brought people into the office with the full intention of firing someone, but changed my mind during the conversation.

I forgot to answer one of your questions. The guy had the arm holding the phone grasped by one agent. The other agent took the phone from his hand and hung it up.

Someone asked "what do we tell the caller if s/he calls back?". "Tell them Leon (not his real name) is no longer a federal agent and that his caseload will be reassigned."

thats interesting that you word it as a question

that would be like saying "do you understand why i am breaking up with you?" it sort of distracts the recipient from realizing they've just been dumped or fired. thats a nice strategy.

that would be like saying "do you understand why i am breaking up with you?" it sort of distracts the recipient from realizing they've just been dumped or fired. thats a nice strategy.

It also helps them rationalize that the decision isn't coming from my personal feelings. It's purely a business decision and they would do the same thing in my shoes.
