Who had the hardest job in Lord of the Rings?

These are the people I could think of, but if you think someone else had a harder job, include that in your post.

Spoilers obviously will be in this topic

Prancing around on shadowfax and running his mouth a lot.

Smoking his pipe while other people are toiling away, disgraceful I say.

Frodo.

He suffered so much from the pain, he had to left middle earth and leave everything behind including his home and friends. He could never recover from the wounds of that journey.

The other ones still had contact after the war of the ring. Pippin even left his home to die in minas thirit iirc.
Maybe legolas and gimli were the only ones who saw frodo again because those two went for the west I think. Much for the honor of gimli as only dwarf ever.

Man, I love lotr.

Frodo. I'm no expert on LotR lore, but from what I understand the rings had to power to influence the mind of the person holding it, and Sauron's ring trumps all of them when it comes to that (as well as many other things). It must have taken a ton of willpower to not give in to it, and even though he needed Sam's help a few times to keep him from giving in to it you still probably have to give him credit for resisting as long as he did. And that's on top of the other stuff they went through.

Frodo for sure. Imagine hiking through a country on foot with a magical ring that is continuously trying to mind-fuck you and torment you even when you sleep, all while slowly depriving you of the basic necessities such as the desire to eat, and psychologically manipulating you to question your will to survive while you constantly battle the desire to give in.

Yeah, and Sam was right next to Frodo pretty much the whole time. It had next to no effect on him, and considering that Sam basically had to drag Frodo the whole way there... Sam definitely had the hardest job.

the bearer of the ring was the subject of its corruption. its most notable effect on the others was visible only when offered to them (gandalf's terrified refusal, galadriel's genuine temptation).

safe to say that in bearing the ring, frodo was subjected to the visions of power that were all but overwhelming to the most powerful beings in the world...every day. galadriel's speech is meant to be a vocalization of precisely what the ring was telling her.

sam wasn't subjected to that because frodo was bearing it. his role was crucial, but he could not suffer the corruption of the ring for frodo.

that said, all of the events of the novels were quite clearly the machinations of gandalf from beginning to end. the elven ring he bore had the power to inspire, and it's clear that whereever he went, he set to the difficult task of motivating the free people to resist sauron. he died for the fellowship, as they were a part of the plan, and he came back because he wasn't finished.

frodo was the pawn, gandalf the player, but one cannot question that frodo was the one who suffered most.

Gandalf followed by Aragorn.

Being of the Maiar, Gandalf had no peers in Middle Earth, save Sauron and Saruman (and Radsgast I suppose), and the mere possible existence of the Ring undid Saruman. Gandalf had to direct the course of events without falling himself. The Council of Elrond was rough..he knew EXACTLY what the right thing to do was, but needed to direct things in a way to give the peoples of M-E the choice of what to do (even if it was possibly stupid) while not being overbearing about it. Sure, it was pretty certain that wiser members like Elrond and Glorfindel would direct the Council to the right path, but it was hardly guaranteed.

But most important, the temptation for him had to be incredible. He had suspicions about the Ring even before Bilbo's party (so much so he felt passing the Ring to Frodo was the only worthwhile point of the party), but afterwards, he was almost certain that it was the One Ring. Despite this, he resisted the urge FOR SEVENTEEN YEARS to show the patience to carefully investigate and follow the proper provenance. During that time, he was the only being in all M-E who had any inkling that the most powerful object in the world was found, let alone knowing exactly where it was. He had to have been tempted many times to abandon all patience and test the Ring before he would have been ready, or to take it up himself. Not only does he keep patience and resists but goes the other way and shows insane trust to actually confide it to Aragorn

That would be more than awesome but but with the death of Tolkien's son who took care of the lotr brand, the chances drop unfortunately to 0.

Back then we got the two tower and return of the king as awesome ps2 games, the turn based role play game "the third age" with party management and all that cool turn based action and even more than 1 good RTS game with the battle for middle earth.

Now we get a gollum game and an overbloaded and overproduced Amazon series.
