Short legged animals have back problems because of their short legs, but I don't know if the tail helps or hurts taht

Nah, it doesn't do shit

All ear cropping/tail docking are is a remnant of the past when people did things for cosmetic reasons or pseudo-science bullshit without caring about the animals themselves

Both processes are actually banned in a large number of countries, but the USA is WAY behind on the times

They dock the tails of sheep, but that's for hygienic reasons. They only do it to wool sheep, not hair sheep. The process is mostly painless, they just put a very tight rubber band around the base of the tail. It cuts off the blood flow and the tail looses all sensation, just like when you sit on your foot and it falls asleep. Eventually the tail just falls off on its own.

Here's one of our lambs before being docked.



If the tails were left intact, it would eventually be completely covered with thick wool which would trap poo and dirt, then flies would lay eggs in it, and the next thing you know you've got fly strike and maggots eating the sheep's flesh.

Not the breed of dog I'd go with anyway. I'm not a fan of smaller dogs. Labrador Retriever or Border Collie is what I prefer.
