Right now I'm having trouble with the FAFSA's IRS tax retrieval tool for my 2018 tax return. So it looks like I have to put all this bullshit in manually.

My aunt tells me that I don't need to do that and what I should actually do is just put $0 for everything no matter what. "I guarantee you, nothing will happen to you," she says.

Yeeeeah, I don't think I'm gonna do that.

"You'll never get a job applying online. You gotta pound the pavement. Go in, ask to speak to the manager, and hand him your resume personally."

Fuck that. Horribly embarassing, and never worked. You know, the whole time, that doing that is a fucking waste of time and that you've guaranteed you're getting no job by doing that.

Oh, also "go to the best college you possibly can. Don't worry about the cost, we've got it covered. And if it comes down to it and you have to take loans, we'll help you pay them back."

They, in fact, did not have it covered after year 2. And after year 4. I found out that the second part was bullshit, too.

I had a rich in-law who once suggested the best thing to do was buy $20k worth of land somewhere underdeveloped in a state I like in the hopes that by the time I retire it's been built up and I can build a house on the land and retire there or sell it for millions.

Not advice to me specifically, but when my brother-in-law was applying to new jobs after graduating college, my mother-in-law was advising him to call back the recruiters a day or two after sending his resume to follow up. And keep doing it if he wasnt hearing back.

Thats a sure fire way to annoy the folks and show desperation as well.

He grew up in a remote village, and his understanding of how the world works is from books like Romance of the Three Kingdoms and tv dramas.

I give him props for making it in America, but it's really hard talking to him sometimes because of this worldview of his. I don't want to shame him for his lack of education, but at the same time, he's so damn arrogant about his beliefs.

Got both of these trash pieces of advice. Fun fact: I never got so much as a phone call from the places that I pestered. Pretty sure my application went straight in the trash.

My entire generation was told growing up that we "had" to go to college. "You need that degree, doesn't matter what it's in!" and then seventeen years old me agreed to attend a college that, even with scholarships, cost me a few thousand and ultimately didn't give me much more than a piece of paper. Tuition at that college has also doubled from what it was a decade ago. Minimum wage hasn't gone up at all.

This. No one directly told me anything. I learned from being a quiet kid that liked trying to understand what other people were telling each other.

Hell, I think I'd rather have no advice at all than trash-garbage advice, which is what I've been getting from my family. That's not even going into the questionable/racist stuff that I've always ignored on principle.

I agree. Being left alone wasn't much of a hindrance. Just being around positive role models is what makes the difference. You'll pick up stuff they drop rather they're directly telling you or just being an example in your earshot/eyesight.

You say that like it would be uncommon >_>. Boomers moved different and even millennials are doing the same, just more disguised and timid about it.

I definitely heard some of it from my dad. He didn't care if I had black friends, but he definitely used the career ender word. Might be good he wasn't around a lot and I absorbed all my information fromy mom and sisters.
