After hinting that he is hesitant to join The Flash due to concerns about COVID-19, Michael Keaton has been confirmed to reprise his role as Batman opposite Ezra Miller's Barry Allen. Keaton's talent agency, ICM Partners, confirmed the news to The Wrap. The long-delayed solo movie began production today, with director Andy Muschietti announcing the kick-off on Instagram.

Keaton voiced some ease at the prospect of joining The Flash solo film in March, expressing concern over scheduling and COVID-19 transmission in the UK.

"I keep my eye more on the COVID situation in the UK than anything," Keaton said. "That will determine everything... That's my first thing about all projects. I look at it and go, is this thing going to kill me, literally? And you know, if it doesn't, then we talk."

Keaton's involvement in The Flash brings the movie's tally of Batmen to two, with Ben Affleck also set to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne in the movie. The film is expected to confront DC's multiverse, with the story planned as a new take on the Flashpoint storyline.Alongside Keaton and Affleck, the cast also includes Sasha Calle as Supergirl, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, and Maribel Verd as Nora Allen, Barry's mother. Although Billy Crudup played Barry's father in Justice League, Ron Livingston will take over the role of Henry Allen for The Flash's solo film.

"It's going to be fun and exciting and there are a lot of DC characters in it," said producer Barbara Muschietti. "Flash is the superhero of this film because he is the bridge between all of these characters and timelines. And in a way, it restarts everything and doesn't forget anything."

Keaton played the Caped Crusader in 1989's Batman and 1992's Batman Returns, both directed by Tim Burton. The two were expected to return for a third movie, but both dropped out and Keaton was replaced by Kilmer for 1995's Batman Forever. Since then, Keaton has expressed interest in returning to the role

It'll be fun to see him return as the character. Hopefully it all flows together well and isn't too much of a mess.

The think I liked about the Norton Batman movies was that they kept the same guy playing Batman the whole time rather than change actors multiple times mid stream confusing everyone.

Oh man, really? I'm not trying to hate, but the guy is like 69. Isn't Batman supposed to be around his 30s when he is depicted as the crime fighting figure?

He will probably play Thomas Wayne, who is the Batman in Flashpoint

Alternate universe shenanigans. The movie has Affleck as well.

I wasn't really old enough to pay attention to such things at the time, but I wonder what the general public reaction was in 1989 when they first announced that Beetlejuice would be playing Batman

If the concept art DC released last year is still accurate, hes playing the same Batman he played before, not Thomas Wayne. I believe theyre altering the Flashpoint story to make it more digestible to the general audience by referencing the classic movies.

That being said, it would be cool if theres a scene where Flash is running through timelines or something and we get a cameo of Jason Mamoa and Gal Gadot clashing with the full power of their armies behind them, since I doubt that were actually getting that plotline in the movie.

It was apparently extremely negative. I've been told it was similar to when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker in that everyone seemed to immediately dismiss it. Keaton was known only for goofy comedies, and a lot of people thought the movie would be like the 60s series just from his casting.

The Keaton casting was hated by fanboys. But apparently something worked because I worshipped those 2 movies. I had a lot of the toys and everything.

People still get mad that Batman killed or that the movies had a couple of winkwinknodnod moments to let you know it was fictitious.

I supposed the no kill rule complaint is valid. (Folks, it's a ploy to allow return villains. Batman doesn't give a shit if the bad guys die.) But the tongue in cheek moments were absolutely necessary. Society still saw Batman as "Na na na na na na, Batman!" and would not have embraced a fully dark, fully serious Batman. In fact, they had a fully dark, fully series James Bond movie playing opposite Batman and it got beat the fuck out.

It was what it was. Keaton played the hell out of that role. To date, I think he's the only one to humanize Batman.

That suit is awesome too.

It had a mix of fun and darkness.
