Spin offs are generally still considered part of the same franchise as the IP they spun off from. For example Shadow the Hedgehog is still part of the Sonic franchise. Yu-Gi-Oh Gx is still part of the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise. It plodded around for a few years including having a GBA game. Then after being dead for like 8 years they make a Saturday morning cartoon of it, an MMO and try to relaunch the card game.
