Last updated at 12:41 a.m. ET

Multiple people have been shot Thursday night at a FedEx facility just outside the Indianapolis International Airport, police have said, according to multiple reports.

The shots occurred shortly before 11:10 p.m. Thursday at 8951 Mirabel Road, which is on the southwest side of the airport. It's an area of not just the FedEx facility, but several hotels and warehouses south of the Interstate-70 interchange.

Local dispatch operators declared it a "Mass Casualty, Level 1" scene, according to WISHTV.

I can verify the phone policy being dumb. Worked at the main hub in memphis for 5 years and you pretty much leave your phone in your car for your shift. Your only means of communication was either your manager or finding a ramp office and hope the workers there aren't using it. Its supposed to slow down stealing which is a major thing there but with incidents like this there's almost no way to contact the outside for help depending on circumstances.

That phone policy is insane. If they are concerned about people screwing around on their phone during work, they should at least be provided those emergency call only flip phones. Having no ability to dial 911 in an emergency is ridiculous.

Thats a dumbass phone policy
It's meant to keep the poor poor. Keep the peons under the thumb of management. When companies like Fedex, with such high volume, use numerical metrics as their only performance indicators, then managers assume that having a phone = slacking off = their numbers look worse = their corporate bonus is lower.

Whataboutism is a pretty poor option to go with seeing as we have them happen nearly daily (sometimes multiple in a day) while other nations have maybe one every few years? And usually those ones were with guns acquired illegally while most of ours were with legally acquired guns or unsecured legal guns belonging to a family member or friend.

The phone policy is 100% necessary. They ship phones, as does UPS.

How would you suggest they do that?

At UPS only management personnel are allowed to have personal phones. Even then we have to go to our security department, write down the make/model/color/IMEI, then we get a silver sticker with a barcode on it that must be put directly onto the phone (not on the case). Every day we scan our phones as we enter/leave the building. Even with all this in place phones are the second most pilfered item in the company (the first is food items like candy bars).

People will literally apply to the job just to steal phones. We'll have someone work here for one day, take a bunch of phones, and then never come back.

Ok if they were gonna take away phones, they couldn't at least install some alternate way of communication? Like an easily accessible landline that's not conspicuous? Honestly sounds like a sloppy policy to which the person responsible might feel some blood on their hands

Also worked at a FedEX facility about 15 years ago.

You had to put all electronics (phones, watches, etc.) and keys in designated lockers. You also had to bring your own lock. If you didn't have one, you had to pray that no one would ransack your locker.

As sad and horrible as it sounds, I'm genuinely surprised there aren't more mass shootings in places like FedEx, UPS, Amazon, etc.

Stupid policy of course........ BUUUUUUUUUUT I work at a pet food/supply distribution center and I hate phones on the floor. People waste time on them which causes everyone to work longer cause we're not reaching our goal as fast as we could

But if we didn't have phones on the floor I couldn't listen to music while I work and that helps the day go by faster, so it's a love/hate relationship

I spent 12 years at UPS inside a hub. I got a theft prevention reward for catching a Snickers Bar burglar. I was unloading a truck, saw a box with what looked like a hole punched in it and a bunch if Snickers crumbs. Looked like the kind of evidence you'd leave if Santa eating cookies. I showed my supervisor because of how ridiculous it was. Later they asked the guy who scanned it into the truck at another hub about it. Dumb ass just blurted out that he did it. He should've denied it. The union would've protected him. Me and my boss got $300.

As far as phones, it depends on your location. We were allowed to have ours on night shift and most had kids. Most people left theirs in their jacket pocket so as not to break them or left at the time clock. People that listened to music wore them in an arm sleeve like you'd wear for jogging.

A more useful comparison would include countries with vaguely comparible gun policy, such as Canada and Serbia.

Not a whole hell of a lot of mass shootings in the Falklands, and they're #2.

Oh no. No electronics inside the building, ever.
Definitely can't listen to music while you work either, that's a massive safety issue.

spikethedevil posted...

We aren't allowed to keep someone in the building. If they want to leave we have to let them, even if we know they have stolen goods on their person. 9 times out of 10 the person will leave before the cops ever get there. We will give them security camera footage, names, addresses, and whatever else they ask for, but the chances of them actually going after anyone are almost 0 unless they've stolen over a certain dollar amount (and even then if the package was insured they simply won't do anything). The rare few times they actually go after someone, obviously they've gotten rid of the phones they took so there's not enough evidence for a prosecution.

On top of that, most of these people know exactly what they're doing and will try to get hired in a building that's just across their state lines so that the cops can't go after them due to jurisdiction limits (again, unless they've stolen enough that it can be considered a Federal offence).

This policy has been active for 15 years? Collective bargaining?

I see there is a union. There are laws which restrict unions and the courts and Labor Board are not impartial as they should be. Guess we have to fight for better labor laws.

Mass shootings? I guess, but we have still had more gun related deaths than we should, especially given we spent most of 2020 in a "lockdown".

This is obviously a terrible tragedy. It happens way too often in this country. I don't have the answer, but saying "aww shucks, they got us again, hope it doesn't happen again" is the wrong answer. That obviously isn't working. These events still happen. There is a systematic problem here. They are not all fluke incidents. We are the only developed country with this problem at this scale.

I'm not going to condemn FedEx for the phone policy. What I will condemn them for is not giving employees easy access to emergency services. Someone else brought up old flip phones. Even without sim cards they can still call 911 and stay charged for weeks. I use old flip phones for emergencies in my vehicles. What did places like this do before cell phones? There has to be some landlines everyone has access to. Silent (or not silent) alarms anyone can activate that autocalls the police. Again, "nothing" can't be the answre.
