House Speaker Nancy Pelosi does not support the effort by her fellow Democratic congressional leaders to expand the Supreme Court from nine justices to 13 and will not bring such a bill to the floor for a vote, she said Thursday. Pelosi made the revelation while during her weekly press conference, offering a stark No after being asked about the measure being introduced to expand the nations highest bench. I support the presidents commission to study a such a proposal, she continued, going on to say that she and her members were focused on President Bidens infrastructure package and not the federal judiciary.

As for whether she would eventually support packing the court, Pelosi said the jury was still out on the matter. I dont know that thats a good idea or bad idea. I think its an idea that to be considered. And I think the presidents taking the right approach to, to have a commission to study such a thing, the top-ranking House Democrat said, calling Bidens move itself a big step. Its not out of the question, it has been done before, she went on to say, noting that the history of our country a long time ago, and the growth of our country, the size of our country, the growth of our challenges in terms of the economy, etc. might necessitate such a thing. I have no plans to bring it to the floor, she said. Asked about the proposal Thursday on Capitol Hill, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) offered similar sentiments to Pelosi. Im not ready to sign on yet, the No. 2 Senate Democrat told reporters, I think this commission of Biden is the right move. Lets think this through carefully. This is historic.

Or they can spend 6 months preparing people for this concept, and actually have some kind of research done when they make a proposal instead of a half-baked bill.

Maybe they know that 6 months from now, after Covid is in the rearview mirror and people are happy and glad we reached herd immunity, would be the perfect time to start that kind of legislation.

I also think they are giving the supreme court one last chance to prove they won't do something insane like ban abortion, and strike down some of the conservative overreach. If they can't do that, then it's time to court-pack.

Task forces, committees, commission studies, investigations that are many months out have always lead to a quiet "no" because that is their only purpose. To politely tell you no. If it was something they had even a 1% interest in doing they would not have some committee quietly kick around the idea for them all year. They'd be using their platforms to shout the positives of it.

Ok court packing is wrong let's just surrender the courts to Republicans forever after they played dirty with Obama's picks and will play dirty again the moment they ever need to get the courts pack. I agree.

I mean, not always: look at Obama's Budget Deficit Commission for an example of a commission that had real impact, even though it didn't ultimately lead to policy changes despite Obama's best efforts.

But this one? Biden has repeatedly demurred on the subject, and Speaker Pelosi is against the idea: it seems exceedingly unlikely that Biden is appointing people to the commission that are going to recommend big changes, because neither Biden nor the other people in power in the party are interested in fundamental changes. At the very least, I'll believe they are when I see it.

That's literally all packing the court is, it's a way to bypass unfavorable rulings. Which you even stated.

The legislative strategy has been to do popular stuff first. Build momentum and approval ratings. The COVID response, $1400, and Infrastructure bill poll well and Biden is polling well.

Taking on something like packing the courts whatever it's merit is controversial and will erode political capital that could perhaps be used for a court packing bill or something otherwise in the future. Now is not the time.

I'm sure a lot of you complaining were in the "money where?" crowd.

Some of you guys just don't know shit about about how legislation works.

Political capital doesn't exist. Voters like it when you do things they like, they don't like it when you do things they don't like.
But the popularity of ideas is not some fixed constant that constrains policymakers. In fact, politicians(especially popular ones like President Biden) can move the needle on specific ideas(for example, Biden declaring his support for fracking at a debate caused approval of fracking among Democratic voters to improve considerably). This doesn't mean they can completely reshape public opinion - far from it - but that they do have some control over how the public views a given issue.
This country will simply not survive as a democracy without difficult reform efforts that will not always be immediately popular. And Democrats are reluctant to do even the things that *are* popular, like passing new voting rights legislation.

Look up the UK's awful pathetic embarrasing House of Lords.

Rich fat ugly unelected 1%ers who get appointed to decide whether or not the shit actual professional elected officials decide to do becomes law.

And every time there is a new government they just appoint a bunch more lords on their side to tip the balance.

Nope, there are only two extreme sides nowadays. If you're not immediately, fully, 100% for one side, then you must be completely, 100% for the other side. That's how it works nowadays.
