Subway is America's largest fast-food chain by the number of locations, so it's hard to imagine we'll ever see a world without it. But the chain closed more locations than any other rival last year and rumors of a troubled operation and an impending sale are swirling.

Subway has shuttered nearly 1,800 domestic locations since the beginning of 2020, with its total number of restaurants decreasing from 23,800 in 2019 to slightly more than 22,000. During that same time period, sales plummeted from $10.2 billion to $8.3 billion.

The chain has also reduced its staff, with some estimating that about 500 employees at the company's headquarters have lost their jobs since early last year. CEO John Chidsey's cost-cutting measures reportedly included moving HQ from Connecticut to Florida, a rumor which Subway has denied. However, the company did relocate a number of its C suite executives, as well as its culinary and marketing teams to Miami last month, according to Business Insider.

Chidsey is also rumored to have put a strain on Subway's relationship with its franchisees by ceasing two-way communication and instituting controversial menu changes that hurt profits. As we've previously reported, many were shocked when Subway announced that it was cutting roast beef and rotisserie chicken from its menu last June, a move which some operators strongly disagreed with because the two proteins were popular among customers. At the same time, the company rolled out a "$5 Footlongs When You Buy Two" deal, which saw a major pushback from operators who said it would lose too much money. (The former decision was recently reversed.)

I honestly never liked their food. Too salty, too nasty, and too overpriced. I'm not a picky eater at all, but Subway is one of those places that I always avoid.

Its quite a mediocre sandwich place. Most of them dont even have a drive thru which would at least kind of make up for the subpar sandwiches

serves them right for dropping their two best subs. glad that idiocy is getting fixed, though i'm sure it'll come with a price increase.

I'm canadian, so maybe restaurants are different here but I'd personally rate subway pretty close to the top in terms of fast food. tastes a lot better, is a much higher quantity of food, for only slightly higher price than most other fast food places

it doesn't really compete with actual restaurants of course but for what it is I'd say I'm pretty impressed with it overall

All their subs tastes the same. What happens to people after eating taco bell, happens to me after a subway sub. Honestly I would rather buy a premade sub from walmart.

it's fine. on occassion I'd get the 12 inch and eat half, then save the second half for lunch the next day. But the only thing from them I can really stomach is the chicken.

only in extreme desperation will I buy their food again. I'm pretty sure they used to not suck many years ago but here we are after years of rapid expansion and cost cutting measures.

Subway isn't terrible but I guess it's not that memorable and the branding is just getting tired and folding to all the newer competition that has been popping up the last 5-10 years.

Not sure how they can turn it around. To me, Subway just seems.... old and boring and non-original. I guess they need to change something up, but not sure what suggestions I'd give them.

In all seriousness though , like one Canadian user posted the Subways here in my experience in terms of fast food are pretty good. Good sized portions for your dollar.

I just wish there were more build your own, customizable sandwich shops.

The only time I went to a Subway with any regularity was at my old job because it was very close by the office and it was at least reliably consistent. Also, the only other choices in the area were all typical fast food like Wendy's, Taco Bell, etc. Trust me, after you've spent a few days in a row of eating out at places like that, Subway seems like heaven comparatively. So, it's all relative. But in normal life, I never go to a Subway since there's no point, it's not that good/memorable.

I feel like there is way too many good sandwich places now a days. Jimmy John's and Jersey Mike's do cold subs way better, Firehouse Subs does hot Sandwiches better. There is no point in Subway anymore

Haven't been to one in ages though, not sure how their pricing is now

before they dumped it last year, my go to sub was ~$12, up from ~$8 ten years ago.

Now that I'm looking at older pictures of Subways, they seemed to have more of a vintage feel at the time. Now they are all same exactly the same. No uniqueness and a very corporate fast food feel. If you've seen one Subway you've seen them all.

i worked there when I was 18 and those cuts were non-negotiable.

Ive seen people get made fools of because the owner didnt think their cut was good enough lol.

...pepperoni? Interesting.

I prefer lettuce, tomato, parmesan, pepper jack, and honey mustard (or mustard and sweet onion combo, very similar).

It's literally the only thing I ever go there for. I can make a better sammich, but their meatballs are great.

I only get the sweet onion chicken teriyaki. It's not bad, imo. But, Subway seems to be one of those places that can either be good or really bad depending on the location.

ok I looked them up and there's only two even remotely near me and I've never really been out near either one looking for food. for comparison there are about 25 subways in the same area, about 10 of which are in walking distance. if I get the chance sometime though I'll check out a mr sub just for you

That seems to be the general consensus.

They are suffering like a lot of other businesses because they aren't willing to take a hit on their bottom line to keep customers coming back and gain new ones with actual good deals and keep their stores open. Capitalistic greed at it's finest. They'd rather watch their empire burn to the ground and thousands of their employees lose their livelyhoods and be out of work than lose a small percentage of their gross profit.

I used to have subway a lot long ago, but don't get take out food anymore.

i liked subway when it was 5 bucks for a footlong. Seem appropriate for the food.

Now i dont wanna pay 13 or so bucks for a meal. I'd rather go to jersey mikes which is around the same price now and way better
