Theres no point you just raise the price on yourself. Keep the price low until the last 10 seconds. Theres no reason to bid minutes to days before.

People keep raising their max bid amounts though. The majority of peoples max bids are at partially based on the items current bid price, so they put in a max bid so pointless bidding wars happen.

To scare off timid bidders. One might feel less inclined to track an item that 7 people have already expressed interest in.

Some people use other accounts to bid on their own items. Its against the rules but of course some people do it anyways. And then you gotta consider the fact that a lot of people are dumb and dont really think about things that they do, and a good portion of folks are actually way dumber then that.

Simplicity. Instead of entering the item details on a snipe bid website or having to watch the item, you just put the max you are willing to pay, then leave. Also if two bidders enter the same amount tie goes to the earliest bid, so there is some advantage in addition to the simplicity of bidding early. Furthermore, if you get out bid early it is easy to move on to the next auction, instead of waiting for disappointment

I don't normally bid but did when I got my PS4 off ebay years ago. I just put a bid in as soon as I saw the new listing as I was working night shifts for the rest of the week and couldn't be bothered to stalk ebay during the day. Surprisingly I was the only bidder so that was neat.

This. Plus people forget to bid at the end (which has happened to me countless times) and they know that the price is going to get up there anyway.

Honestly, 5 days out vs 3 days out vs 1 day out is all pretty similar.

Anyone making stupid bids early in the auction I automatically assume is the seller on another account trying to inflate the price, and I usually don't bid when I see that.
