I always see them being built here in downtown San Francisco yet I have a hard time imagining most people can afford the rents there (even pre-pandemic)

$4000-5000+ (or more) per month isnt exactly chump change.... just saying...

A lot of them are probably bought outright with cash offers made by foreign investors. Certain cities like Miami have a significant problem with this and the growing number of unoccupied properties doesn't really matter to the people selling them because they're getting bought. It's one of the reasons why you've seen some candidates float the idea of a tax or a fee levied against someone who owns a property but doesn't live in it.

Yeah but the cost of living is also astronomical in San Francisco so $100,000/year is absolutely nothing here

Just imagine how bad it is for people here who dont make big money

And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, "Well... how did I get here?"

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

And you may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"
And you may ask yourself, "Where is that large automobile?"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful house"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful wife"

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was

I live in a luxury apartment in Seattle. Sometimes I wonder why, though. I could just buy a house.

Maybe the amenities? Overall atmosphere of the place?

Honestly id just buy a house because at least youd (eventually) own it

A house is also a full-time job though, with the constant upkeep and repairs and such that you have to do and pay for 100% by yourself

At least in my case most of the big jobs are the landlord's responsibility

Very rich people. I would assume some are rented by companies for traveling workers.

I used to think like this too, so I see where you're coming from, but just get a home warranty and it's like $75 for when something breaks. Besides, they don't break as often as you might think.
