I...wouldn't care? As far as the character of Hank Hill or the show King of the Hill is concerned. Probably traumatized by having a gun at my head and nearly dying, but not the name calling. And I certainly wouldn't hold some grudge against the show or character b/c of what some criminal said to me...
Like I said, Apu's not even a negative portrayal or anything (as in, the show trying to make Indians look bad or stoking hatred against them). I can't fathom even using it as an insult like someone would many other racial slurs/names that actually do have negative connotations. Just sounds like an ignorant moron trying to insult you and that lame example was the best he could think of.

While I can see how a lot of people have this point of view, I think the situation is different with Apu and I hope youll hear me out when I explain why I think that.

For one thing Apu was one of the very few Indian characters in American popular culture for a long time. There are a bunch of times that I heard Indian people be called Apu by people who thought they were being funny.

Also while the character Apu is fairly intelligent on the show they play up a ton of Indian stereotypes with him and sometimes the punchline is just him yelling something like Oh Kolkata! or something similar. Its subjective whether or not something like that is funny but it does make it a little uncomfortable when you realize it was a white dude voicing those lines.

And it isnt like Hank Azarea just started feeling this way. There have been public conversations about Apu for a very long time and Ive heard him in talk shows going back years talking about how he himself wasnt sure if it was ok for him to be doing that role and that he wanted to listen to people and that ultimately it should be up to the viewers.

I don't think he should have to apologize for voicing a fictional character just because they were a different race... It's just voicing a character. Anybody should be able to voice anybody, as long as they have (or can imitate) the voice the creator is looking for. Race shouldn't matter. Even in real life, it depends on who the director or whoever is looking for, I would think...

It's acting, and voice acting not even regular acting where what you look like compared to the character portrayed matters.

He was fine as Apu, and Apu was fine as a character. Actually one of the more positively portrayed, intelligent, and nice major characters in a show full of loud obnoxious ass holes and idiots for comedic purposes.

This. It's all kinds of ridiculous. Even if people were annoyed the accent imitations, that sort of shit is still going to happen when people copy the new guy. The only way to avoid things like that would be to remove Apu from the show, and removing diversity to "protect" groups kinda sounds like a shit idea.

It's very stupid. Its acting for a reason. Even more-so voice acting lets you take on other roles and generally the audience will have no idea about that person behind the voice they hear.

This voice acting stuff isn't only in animation, however. Darth Vader (played by a white actor) is voiced by James Earl Jones, which shocked me when I first learned the truth. My first thought was that James Earl Jones lent his voice to Darth Vader because 1)he was relatively unknown and wanted the exposure and 2)the director at the time (George Lucas) believed that his voice would bring more gravitas to the role. Only in the recent past has the acting community started to address their part in perpetuating racism through movies, television, etc. but they aren't the only ones responsible since you have to change the mindset of those who write, produce and film the art itself.

I think he has great range as a voice actor and this is a damn shame. It shouldn't be controversial for a voice actor to take on any character of any race if they can nail the voice.

Yes, on an isolated level, acting should be about acting. Whereas in the modern day landscape of identity politics, representation also has to be taken into account, but outright forcing both the character and actor representation into one package, is a bit too much for me. For clarity, I support both and also the overlap, I am just not a fan of quotas and forcing things.
